It’s incredible lads can’t figure out why toner was sent packing. Henderson and Ryan are our first choice locks. Beirne is an impact player and a poor scrummager. He also scrummages on the loose head side. Toner is a loose head scrummager too bu. It’s very likely we will play South Africa in a q/f in which case kleyn is vital. Also in training when they are scrummaging it makes sense to have kleyn as he locks out the scrum. It makes no sense to bring toner if he’s not first choice. He’s a fairly pointless sub.
Throw in as well the increasing level of injuries that Big Dev has had over the last year. He is 33 now so injuries are an inevitability really. You’d feel for him on a personal level but there’s no room for sentiment here. New Zealand have left 108 times capped Owen Franks (who was their first choice right head for the best part of a decade up until a few weeks ago), out of their squad after a run of bad performances.
Toner scrummaged on the TH side for 2 or 3 seasons before Ryan came along.
Kleyn probably wont be on bench for any of big games barring an injury. So he has been brought to play the 2 pool games against USA and Samoa most likely. Billy Holland could have done the same job against those teams neither of whom will have a dominant scrum . Toner def could have done the job on his form of last autumn
His form had gone was the main factor in the deicsion
Not a hope could have toner with his injury profile starting v the boks if Ryan got injured. You’d end up with Henderson and Beirne for the last 20 minutes. We’d be murdered. Kleyn is going because he’s a tight head lock. Toner is a loose head lock. Kleyn knows Beirne and scanell/John Ryan best too are other back ups.
