The Rugby Thread (Part 1)

I’m a long time subscriber to that already. I just hope that when South Dublin play North Dublin in the Leinster hurling championship there are a few rugby pitches left in the city for the kids who still have an interest in playing with the oval ball.

Hope you don’t read the indo today mate about Longford gga

I had no idea this was starting… Very low key.

What’s starting?

70 posts there and not a one about the match. I think Ireland will win anyway. Also, not there yet but there seem to be a lot of decent players coming through that will be there for a good few years.

Agreed - largely because Wales have regressed more than we have and also the impact of no crowd at Cardiff.

Big concern as ever is 10. Sextons days are numbered and the chances of him playing the majority of 5 games in quick succession is low - big drop to the the next in line though

I see a lot of talk about rugby taking over in Gaa areas especially in west cork. No chance in my opinion. Most of those lads go to Bandon grammar school. Wouldnt be playing gaa anyway. Couldnt see rugby taking over in Castlehaven.

Sexton is done at this level and Ross Byrne probably isn’t good enough. Desperately need Carberry to regain form and fitness or else hope Ben Healy or Harry Byrne to really kick on.

Yeah - I’d agree with that.

I’d also suspect there is zero point in having sexton near the squad if he isn’t starting so it’s a difficult one.

I don’t think Ben Healy’s ceiling is top quality international. Might need Crowley behind him to push on.

I know he’s a bit of a prick but I thought mick Galway said something very interning in a recent interview which is unusual for him.

He said the Munster sides he was on regularly beat teams more skilful than them and who were fitter than them because they’d that bit of fire in belly and a really team ethic.

The Irish rugby seem to have completely lost that pride in the jersey type mentality that serves Irish teams so well in various sports. Maybe Paul o Connell can bring that to the table.

I really have a little expectations for this six nations. Andy Farrell was the wrong appointment but it’s a difficult time to be in charge.

Who would have liked ahead of Farrell to get the job
Assume Farrell was seeing as the “safe choice” by the decision makers

Why is Madigan not being looked at again now he is back in Ireland? He provided decent back-up to Sexton before and is surely better than Billy Burns?

I didn’t have any real view to be fair. I just don’t think he’ll do any good.

Maybe in a way it’s good Farrell got the job. It was a poisoned chalice after Schmidt anyway so now they’ve two years to find the right man and let Farrell deal with the fall out as the team breaks up.

Is Paul involved with the Irish team now?

Well he’s 31 or 32 now and was never really good enough in my opinion. It’s a tricky one. Sexton isn’t good enough anymore and there’s no obvious player to take over for him.

In some coaches eyes it might be best to leave him there and build around him so when the heir to throne comes along it’s much easier to slip them into the side.

England after 03 World Cup had so many different 9,10 and 12 combos it was very difficult for them to do much good. I’m sure players careers were ruined by the chopping and changing as well. We don’t want that to happen.

Have you seen the esri participation rates study mate?

You are arguing over the 12th most popular sport taking over the 11th

*Paulie

Yes

I get the strong impression Wales are absolutely fucked and we will win well.

Watching the Leinster lads v Cardiff the other week, its a matter of time before the likes of Harry Byrne, Baird and the truly excellent Dan Leavy are in the Irish side.
