Childâs sports day coming up?
We played a hurling match against Boherlahan Dualla the other night - No sash on the jerseys anymore.
Lovely jersey, if it didnât have the sponsor, it would be iconic.
Must have been a new set, very surprising if itâs gone.
There was a colour clash so thinking back maybe their alternate jersies dont have it and their main ones do.
That would make more sense, their nickname is âthe Sashâ.
The yellowbellies nickname came from Wexford lads going over to Cornwall at the time and King George shouting âup the yellowbelliesâ as they were wearing yellow sashes. Still not sure where the purple and gold comes from no matter who I ask.
Only sash in Wexford, only club to win the club All Ireland (well technically Shelmaliers did but not the same).
A broken tooth even fell out of itâŚ
Cushinstown had one when I was growing up.
Youre right! And they still do. Forgot about them.
little mish mash of both stories there from my recollection of hearing it.
One of the Colcloughs of Tintern (pronounced cloakly) had a hurling team from South Wexford. He boasted about how great they were and arranged a game between them and a team from around Roslare/Piercestown I think. He picked the best of these and brought them to Cornwall to take on a team from there. It was here they won their game and got the Yellow Belly moniker. I dont know about the King George part of it, but it could be the case, but it was more a case of the opposition and then bringing the name home and being hailed as the Yellow Bellies when they got back.
Well well well
Leinster shur
Was watching a show on RTĂ about old forts and they had technology that could map them and show how big they were etc. they had one such one in Wexford and the purple and gold, in the hosts opinion, came from the heather on the hills that had a gold flower through it.
That would make perfect sense!
Misread that as old farts
