Mary Immaculate College qualified for the Fitzgibbon Cup quarter finals with an emphatic win over GMIT. Needing a win to ensure qualification they played with ĂŠlan and passion to move away from the Galway outfit. Played in a heavy Carnmore pitch (that will host the Fitzgibbon Cup finals in early March) the game at times resembled a rugby game with sticks as rucks of players tried to unearth the heavy sliotar. But it was the Limerick collegeâs players that showed hurling prowess with fine displays of skill all over the field. The rugged Robert OâDonnell and the crafty Cillian Fennessy held up the GMIT full forwards while the unerring eye of Declan Hannon at centre back spotted every ball that rained down on him. In midfield Colm Galvin was lord using speed and stick to continually win possession and create chance after chance for the Mary Immaculate College forwards.
An early flurry of frees as referee Brian Gavin stamped his authority on the game gave Mary Immaculate College a 2 points to one lead. GMITâs Paul Hoban put Aidan Lynch through for a goal on the 12th minute. This woke up Mary Immaculate College and they dominated the rest of the half. After 3 wides they regained the lead on the 16th minute when Luke OâFarrell caught a high ball, got inside his marker and coolly swept home a goal. Mary Immaculate College captalised further on their dominance with scores from OâFarrell, Galvin, John Conlon and Brian OâHalloran. GMIT replied with a single point. This left the half-time score GMIT 1-02 Mary Immaculate College 1-07.
The second half was only seconds old when William Hickey steeped inside the GMIT defence to get his first score. GMIT then had their best phase of the game and half-way through the second half reduced the Mary Immaculate College lead to 3 points. John Conlon steadied the ship with a great point following a long clearance by Declan Hannon and Galvin scored his 2nd point with Niall OâMeara found him with a pinpoint pass. The dogged GMIT pulled the lead back to 3 points with scores from Hoban. William Hickey then sealed the game with a brilliant goal again set up by OâMeara. Mary Immaculate College finished the game with 3 more points as GMIT knew the game was lost.
Mary Immaculate College will play DIT next Tuesday in Dublin for a place in the semi-finals.

Former Irish Olympian Jerry Kiernan last night launched an astonishing broadside on the physical fitness levels of intercounty GAA players.
Kerryman Kiernan, who finished ninth in the marathon in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and regularly appears on RTĂ televised athletics coverage, made the remarks in relation to yesterdayâs announcement of the Government grant scheme for GAA players in favour of athletes.
âThe GAA are the richest sporting organisation in the country, they should be able to look after themselves,â Kiernan said on Newstalkâs Off The Ball programme.
âI watch some of the games occasionally, but I watched some National League games over the weekend and it struck me how unfit some players were.
âI donât have a high opinion of GAA playersâ fitness or their commitment to fitness. I understand that it means a lot to a lot of people in the country, but if the money wasnât given to them, would it affect attendances?â
Former Clare hurler Jamesie OâConnor also appeared on the show, and didnât agree with Kiernanâs assertions.
âBack in 1997, I trained 22 times in 21 days, I was in the shape of my life and we had a great year subsequently.
âFitness levels have progressed and advanced as sports science is being applied to a greater level, so I donât think you can question the commitment that is being put in.â[/quote]

Mary I backboned by Clonlara men have made it to the Fitzgibbon semi finals beating DIT earlier today
I have seen 4 National League games so far and I must say the players donât look as conditioned as before, bar Dublin, but that may have to do with their age profile. it could be the tv though.
Cork are a disgrace right now. Canât believe what a waste of talent we have become. Great to see Ray Cummins call them out on it, lazy forwards. OâNeill upped it last year but seems to be resting on laurels. Goulding is injured all the time cos he plays too much club and doesnât look after himself enough. I was happy with the selectors brought in, but their play has regessed and is very unimaginative. Cork have great talent, O 'Neill has the capabilities to be as good as Michael Murphy but is inconsistent and lazy. Kerrigan has revertednack to pre '10 and we still have not copped Gould, Kissane and Pierce O Neill wonât do anymore.
Going back to colleges, I hope Billy Morgan gives Moyna a box in the mouth in a sideline skirmish during the Sigerson. Billy is a legend to be still fighting the fight, but that guys a cock who thinks he invented football.
Anyone that saw DCU in '10 Sigerson with their 3 man line down the middle of the forwards and 11 defenders knows heâs a fucking bluffer.

Why shouldânt Goulding play with his club?
He plays all league games, when fit, and has played a number if challenge games. I have seen him play in these a d he kinda half goes, burst every now and then to destroy some poor young fella. With the training required at this level I donât see te benefit of him playing allthe time for Eire Og. I admire his commitment, but championship and well placed league gMes would be enough IMO. He is injury prone.
I understand my former university defeated UL in the Fitzgibbon Cup today. What a moment for me and indeed all other UCD alumni.
The window lickers in LIT were also beaten.
