The Smashing Tunes Thread (Part 1)

High praise indeed for OCS in the last few posts, Iā€™ll give those songs a good listen later on.

Day we Caught the train was the quintessential Gorbys song of that era. No doubt you lost your shit on that dance floor many many times!!!

Indeed, Gorbys filled the hole when there wasnā€™t a decent indie night, good spot back in the day.

Used to be a comedy club there Sunday and Monday nights. Ā£1 in from 7 and Ā£1 bottles of Heineken all night. Could stay on for the club night then. Good music always.

Were you a freak scene fan?

Ya, I didnā€™t miss a freakscene or Gigantic (Friday) for the first couple of years, I had a run in with a prick of a bouncer there one night and the cunt made it hard for me to get in for a while.

Where was gigantic on? I was rarely out of a Friday night

Henryā€™s, same crew that did Freakscene.

This thread really is gone to fuck.

From discussions about best Brit Pop bands (Brit Pop was a horrible genre for the most part) to raving about the Smashing Pumpkins - a few decent songs but mainly a poor manā€™s Nirvana.

The fucking Lightning Seeds were being discussed not so long ago.

Seems also to be a horrible new clique in here.

I long for the obscure drone.

@Fagan_ODowd needs to start cleaning house here.

Iā€™m well aware of the Wedding Present thanks very much.

Thatā€™s a dinger, itā€™s about dropping acid?

Sorry @farmerinthecity Iā€™ve been a regular contributor so Iā€™m likely one of the culprits. One mans smashing tune is another mans crock of shit, I try to mix it up as much as possible, my tastes are quite eclectic. I often listen to tunes posted here, quite a few are shit.

Fuck sake farmer. I was reading it and thinking the same fucking thing. The Boo Radleys and Ocean Colour Scene.
Is that what you took a stand against Paul Brady for all those years ago? This must be what a counter revolution looks like.

Paul Brady.

Aaaah what I wouldnā€™t give for some of him now.

Seriously though he is miles ahead of some of the bile on here recently.

Not only are you a musical snob, but youā€™re also badly wrong here. Cobain was somewhat prophetic when he wrote ā€œTeenage angst has paid off well. Now Iā€™m bored and oldā€, as Smashing Pumkins sound has held up much better than Nirvanaā€™s. Possibly down to the fact that Corgan is a far more accomplished musician than Cobain ever was.

Even in Seattle, Nirvana was about the bottom of the pile of the bands that signed for major labels. Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees, Mother Love Bone, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, Melvins - all better. Nirvana rarely gets a play in my house, whereas all the above are on relatively heavy rotation.

Add into the mix that Cobain was also an unashamed rip-off merchant. The grand larceny he committed on Killing Jokeā€™s ā€œEightiesā€ was fucked beyond belief!

Having said all that, In Utero was a cracking album. And I was sad when he died.

Fuck it, Iā€™ve been getting lightning mcqueen wrong for years then as well.

I donā€™t agree with all of that but itā€™s approaching a clamping Iā€™d say.
