In fairness Nirvana didnât have much of a chance to build a legacy. What you can say is their output got better over time, as you say yourself their final statement In Utero is a great album. They left the stage on a high note, unlike a lot of their contemporaries especially SP who really deteriorated after Adore. Even Nirvanaâs earliest work has some gems, Aneurysm and Sliver off Insecticide are two of my favorites of theirs.
Alice in Chains would be my favorite of that Seattle era as well, and their recent work is decent, but you have to be taking the piss ranking Mudhoney, Melvins, and even Soundgarden above Nirvana.
I like it, the snobs complaining about shit bands from the 90s and the response is a shit band from the 80s. Actually I was a bit of a fan of the Twins and 4AD bands in general. Saw them live once and they were appalling, some of it was due to Liz having a heavy cold, but some bands just canât translate studio work to the stage. This is This Mortal Coil but features Liz in top form.
Itâs Incesticide pal, and itâs a compilation album of b-sides, etc. from around the Nevermind recordings, so not quite accurate to call it their earliest works. The middle years, perhaps?!
Cobain often spoke of his massive respect for King Buzzo and the Melvins, and with good reason. The Melvins pushed the boundary on songwriting conventions, and the early-Nirvana sound owes a great deal to them. Iâd still have them ahead of Nirvana, but itâs all a matter of personal taste really.
Mudhoney, you can argue one way or the other. I loved Green River, and Mudhoney continued that raw sound.
As for Soundgarden, there is no way in hell youâre going to convince me that Nirvana is better than them. No more than the Melvins, Nirvanaâs early sound owed a lot to Soundgarden. It was distorted, slow-paced punk / metal (not a bad thing, and there were some absolute standouts - Negative Creep was a fucking monster riff!), but thereâs no denying the blueprint set by Cornell and Thayil was a massive influence on Cobain (and Jerry Cantrell for that matter). As for Soundgarden themselvesâŚ
The 4 albums they released between 1989 and 1996 were nothing short of phenomenal. Louder than Love was a dirty, sleazy record and it rocked from start to finish. Badmotorfinger took their sound to a whole new level. Listen to Outshined again⌠the last section where the two guitars and bass are locked into the same riff is fucking epic. The complexity and psychedelic aspects of Superunknown and Down on the Upside make them two of my all-time favourite records. Iâve been listening to them again for the past 2 weeks. Itâs a clichĂŠ at this stage, but theyâre unreal. Unbelievable.
I am not going to argue with you about Alice in Chains, because I was / am a fanboy.
Critique my musical tastes all you like pal but donât mock my fucking dyslexia!
Sliver was recorded in July 1990 and Aneurysm in Jan 1991, and I would say epitomize the first real gelling of their various influences into the Nirvana sound (Bleach is very derivative and a bit of a mess). Every band has influences, the signature of a great band is one that transcends their influences and brings a genre to a new level. No matter how much one likes or dislikes grunge, every fan of decent music should honor Nirvana for driving the final nail in the hair metal coffin. All Nirvanaâs influences were good (even the Knack) to great, the Wipers, the Melvins, Mudhoney, the Vaselines, and especially the Pixies whose dynamics Nirvana totally ripped off. In terms of ripping off their influences Nirvana were possibly the most flagrant since Led Zeppelin, but doesnât mean they werenât great, and as mentioned they did drive off the glam poodles.
You are grossly overrating Soundgarden, but to each his own, and as a metalhead I can see why you would like them. After all, they were a metal band originally and adapted to grunge. Calling those FOUR albums phenomenal though is just giving ammo to the music snobs. Badmotorfinger and Superunknown are great albums, but Louder than Love and Down on the Upside are merely good to great. None of them are a patch on In Utero, Nevermind, or even Unplugged. IMVHO of course
I canât believe I got through that and didnât mention Meshuggah.
Interestingly, Soundgarden played a big part in killing hair metal too. For example, Alice in Chains was a glam / hair metal band until Kim Thayil schooled Jerry Cantrell on how he got the sound on âNothing To Sayâ. When Facelift came out, the Soundgarden influence was unquestionable. Add in the Stayley factor and you get tracks like âWe Die Youngâ, âSea of Sorrowâ, âBleed the Freakâ, âMan in the Boxâ - a fantastic album by a band that was really getting into its groove.
