The Smashing Tunes Thread (Part 1)

Gobshite

Listened to it there on my new Sony earbuds when I was out walking Bobby. Shades of early Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Scott Walker and forgotten American songwriter David Ackles and Kraftwerk in places. Very good.

You have to mentuon the genius of Warren Ellis when talking about Cave now as well.

Giving this Ghosteen a spin right now. It’s growing on me as the album wears on, the last track of Pt 1 is superb. I hadn’t heard about the tragedy with his son.

That’s been the case since 1994 and Let Love In. The man’s output between the Bad Seeds, The Dirty Three, solo work and film score soundtracks with Cave is truly staggering.

The follow up from The Lost Messiahs

Ellis and other members of the Dirty Three stayed in my brother’s gaff after a gig in Dublin in the late 90s.

Ellis was sound enough initially but got atrociously drunk and was then a bit of a nightmare apparently. It always seems to be the way with these talented arty types.

Cave’s best stuff was prior to Let Love In in my opinion.

The Good Son and Henry’s Dream are two of the finest albums a fella could listen to.

I was referring to Warren Ellis’ contributions.

Dirty Three do a good live show

Ellis has the appearance of a fella who could get fairly rat arsed alright

I haven’t seen them but doesn’t Ellis have his back to the audience during the performance?

I saw them at Primavera about 13/14 years ago. They played outside in the sun at about 6pm. I think he might have played with his side to the audience now that you mention it. I did have a full bottle of rum drank at that stage. We briefly met him before the gig as he was wandering about and exchanged a few pleasantries. Seemed an alright sort

I saw a out half of her set in Lisbon. She’s very very good at all the things she does but jungle is the only song that really grabs me when I listened to the album, the others don’t quite so much. But she was very good live. She’s cool as fuck.
