Ok so they had nearly become a stadium rock band at this stage and the mad creative genius of Metal Box was absent but this still has one of the greatest lines in popular music.

I listened to Metal Box for the first in years during the week. What a wonderfully weird piece of work.

I have a physical copy of the Metal Box here but I don’t open it to play it very often because it’s so easy to damage the vinyl because of the way it’s packaged. I have a cd of it that I listen. I got clocked doing 147kph singing along to Careering on the M9 years ago. 2 points and 80 euro for my troubles.

Some of the best versions of the tunes on that album were on their Old Grey Whistle Test appearance

And then there was the quite surreal appearance on American Bandstand
