The Smashing Tunes Thread (Part 1)

Are you a fan of The Smiths?

I liked them but not religiously. Mainly for the guitar to be honest. Was thinking of playing a bit tomorrow on the drive down the country.

Marr in The Smiths to me is just unbelievable. He left at 23. If you take There is a Light that Never Goes Out he wrote the music, structured the song and overdubbed a flute and synthesised strings as well. And produced it. And acted as a manager for them.

Never heard the Eagles sound so country, before or since, but it’s amazing.

Heard this on the radio last night, been in my head all day.

In fairness the Carpenters were fabulous musicians. Even though they were complete weirdos Richard was a superb piano player and an even better arranger and Karen had probably the lushest voice in all of pop history. On top of that they chose their songs very well.

ABBA - Knowing Me Knowing You

A truly great band. Managed to combine dark themes, great music/production and wonderful pop in their songs. We’ll never have another band like them.
