The Snooker Thread (Part 1)

Ronnie Oā€™Sullivan leads Marcus Campbell 4-1 while Ricky Walden has shot out to a 6-0 lead over Michael Holt in the first two games of the tournament.

Comfortable enough 10-4 win for Ronnie without having to scale any great heights. Barry Hawkins & Ricky Walden both in command of their matches but Mark Williams & Shaun Murphy in tight matches.

Graeme Dott v Peter Ebdon underway this morning at 10am in the clash of the former champions.

1-0 to Dott at the mid-session interval.

Mark Williams first seed to be eliminated. Disgraced former champion John Higgins in trouble too, 3-6 down after first session.

6-6 between Dott and Ebdon in a snoozefest that is lasting 30 mins a frame. They couldnā€™t even finish yesterdays session, dreadful stuff.

Come on Ebdon. I donā€™t say that too often.

Mark King leads Mark Allen 5-4 while Dott leads Ebdon 8-6 in their dour encounter. Over 6 and a half hours played already and the organisers have a job trying to fit these two in later on so they can finish this. Ebdon is particularly annoying, seemingly insisting on the ref cleaning the cue ball every time he takes a shot.

A disappointing day for snooker fans with the news that the great John Higgins has been beaten 10-6 by Mark Davis.

Davis beating Higgins in the snooker. Thatā€™s pretty much the way its always been.

No need to watch the championships this year so.

Snooker fans will be relieved to see the back of Higgins after the disgrace he brought on the sport in Ukraine three years ago.

If its an extension of Glasgow soccer tribalism thatā€™s attracting you to it, I believe that Stephen Maguire and Alan McManus who are still in the tournament support Celtic and the 2006 World Champion, Graeme Dott who supports Rangers can serve as your pantomime villain.

Thanks pal but thereā€™s nothing I didnā€™t already know in your post. That said, Maguire wouldnā€™t have much of an interest in football but Celtic are his preference all right. However, could you tell me if thereā€™s any Roma or Lazio supporters left in the draw?

That I donā€™t know. I would suspect not. Tony Drago is the only snooker player I can recall who closely followed Italian football. I think he was a Juventus fan though.

Thanks. Who does that orange cunt Mark Allen support?

Larne? Bad bad defeat last night losing to a journeyman like Mark King.

Whatā€™s the position with Ronald Antonio. Heā€™s always referred to now as an Arsenal fan. I seem to recall when he emerged in the mid 90ā€™s that he was a Spurs fan?

Back on the table this morning, its Matthew Stevens v Marco Fu and Alan McManus v Ding Junhui

Iā€™ve always had a lot of time for Matthew Stevens. Pity he never won it. A terrific player in his prime but a bit like Jimmy White, a brittle temperment always let him down.

Maguire looks like he could go out to Poomjaeng - down 9-8 with the Thai in the balls in the next frame.

Ding, Selby and Trump all looking comfortable in their matches.

Stevens 6-3 down to the plucky Marco Fu.

Poomjaeng has broken down so Maguire not finished yet.

There has been quite a few of what I would classify as the second tier seeds going out over last few days. Selby looks in good form. Reckon itā€™ll be either Selby or Robertson to win it. Theyā€™re seeded to meet in the semi final.

Fair set of lugs on Poomjaeng
