The Tennis Thread

Akin to Bert Trautmann playing an FA Cup Final with a broken neck.

Tennis is at a very low ebb. There’s very little by way of quality players coming through. Mostly just brittle one dimensional big hitters. Nick the Greek and Tipsy the Greek possibly have the skills but not the application or mindset.

Not one of this Next Gen has stopped up at a Grand Slam and shown that they’re made of the right stuff to get the job done against the now very old big guns.

Thiem is the only player who has shown he has the minerals against Djokovic in recent years.

My highlight of the week was an interview with tsitipatis on Eurosport after he beat nadal. Tim Henman standing in the studio says hi Stefanos this is Tim henman here… waits for the “Hi Tim”
no reply from tsiptipis awkward silence ensues then after a few seconds which henman realises he’s been blanked he proceeds with said interview

Must be hard for Djokovic trying to be so humble when he knows on the inside he’s a stone cold killer

Federer won on his return to tennis today after over a year out of action.

Nadal had to pull out of upcoming tournaments to look after a back injury suffered at the Australian Open. That has allowed Medvedev to go to no 2 in the World.

Jannik Sinner is in the Miami Open final.

When was the last time a teen won a masters? Was it Djokovic?

Clay court season gets underway this week in Monte Carlo.

Interesting to see Toni Nadal join FAA’s coaching setup. Didn’t think he’d work with another player while Rafa is still active.

Djokovic has also broken Federer’s record for most weeks at no 1.

Agassi was a greater player than Sampras.

Zverev beat Nadal in straights sets in the quarter final in Madrid today. Second consecutive quarter final defeat of the clay court season for Nadal. Rublev beat him in Monte Carlo last month.

TBF Nadal has had a few indifferent clay court seasons in recent years.

Think we will have it together by RG.

His win in Barca brought him back up to world no 2.

I think he secretly is hoping to fall back to no 3 for RG as it removes the possibility of having a Thiem/Djokovic path to the final.

I don’t see Medvedev being a threat for RG.

Tsitsipas is probably putting himself up there as a real contender this year for RG on current form.

It will be one of Nadal, Djokovic, Thiem and Tsitsipas.

You could have left it there.

The decline of these guys will be sudden and overnight. Nadal will be fav for RG this year but every year he will that bit more vulnerable.

He usually finds his way at RG over the two weeks but his form would certainly be a concern.

The collapse against Tsitsipas at the AO could point to a man who is physically on the wane. It was very un-Nadal like. I think it’s key he gets a favourable draw.

No US player in the Top 30 in this weeks rankings. First time that has happened in the near half century of computerised ATP rankings.

Cracker between Djokovic and Tsitsipas here.

Djokovic through in over 3 hours.

He will play Sonego or Rublev in the semi later today.

Eurosport showing the Nadal Thiem 2019 final now.

Epic stuff.
