The IOC should look at taking the 2032 Games off Brisbane. There will inevitably be further human rights abuses by Australian authorities otherwise.
Trying to impress their mates in China no doubt, ideologically Australia is not a western style country anymore, they are more aligned with shitholes like China
I was well ahead of the curve on this one last week.
Novak Djokovic’s father has called on The Queen to intervene amid the tennis star’s ongoing ordeal in Australia. The Serb won his court ruling on Monday regarding his visa cancellation, after being held in a Melbourne detention centre following complications over his medical vaccine exemption to compete at this month’s Australian Open.
Djokovic’s family are outraged at their son’s treatment in Australia, where his medical exemption was initially met with public suspicion.
The 34-year-old has been outspoken in his opposition to mandated vaccines in the past, and reports indicate that he revealed to Australian border officials that he was not fully vaccinated.
He was subsequently held in Melbourne for several days, with his mother describing his living conditions and treatment as inhumane.
The tennis star’s family has called for more help on the matter, with Australia’s immigration minister retaining powers to re-cancel Djokovic’s visa and deport the defending Australian Open champion.
Speaking to Serbian media on Monday, Srdjan Djokovic, the 20-time Grand Slam champion’s father, called on The Queen to help ‘protect’ his son.
"I call on the Queen of Britain, Elizabeth, the leader of the Commonwealth, to intervene and protect the human rights of my son Novak Djokovic and to stop the political prosecution that has been carried out against him since he came to Australia",
While the legal victory has been described by the player’s mother as the biggest victory of his career, tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg pointed out that he may not be out of the woods yet.
In the Australian government’s written response to Djokovic’s deportation appeal document, the right to re-detain the player means that even though he was victorious in ‘Round 1’, it could merely be the beginning of ‘Round 2’.
Once Nigel Farage got involved it was game over
A very shrewd move by the Djokovic family to enlist the help of a tennis fan and lobbyist as influential as influential and astute as Nigel Farage.
Looks like the Djoker is in bother again.
It’s been completely lost in the PR spin of yesterday, but Judge Kelly didn’t make any finding on the validity of Novak’s visa. All he adjudicated on was whether the Border Officials at the airport had acted in a heavy handed manner in not giving Novak an opportunity to explain the basis of his medical exemption which got him the visa. Judge Kelly found that he wasn’t given an opportunity to explain himself and it was heavy handed not allowing him to do so and throwing him into a gulag.
From what I’ve been reading over the last day, the basis on which he got the medical exemption that got him the visa was testing positive for COVID on 16 December as he then couldn’t be double vaccinated in time before travelling to Australia. I have heard comment that medical exemptions relating to playing in the Australian Open had to be submitted by 10 December, which if true means Novak was at least 6 days out of time as he didn’t contract COVID until 16 December.
Looking at what you’ve posted from social media, it would suggest that Novak was travelling and in Spain on 17 December, the day after he tested positive for COVID in Serbia on 16 December. If this is correct, he wouldn’t have been eligible for an Australian visa.
Ultimately, I suspect Novak has completely mugged off the Australians and got into the place illegally. After the PR disaster of yesterday, don’t think the Australian government will have the appetite for another PR disaster in deporting him.
Claire Byrne shrieking that Novak may not have filled out his form correctly. ‘Many people without his resources can fill forms correctly’
The nuances of it all sound like they are lost on Claire. I suspect it’s more a case of the form was filled out in a manner that secured Novak his visa.
They should fuck him out for the laugh
Odds on he’s fucked out
What has emerged over the last 24 since Judge Kelly dealt with a very net preliminary matter in court is that there are holes everywhere in Novak’s narrative and the basis upon which he got the medical exemption and the visa.
It’s really now a question of whether the Australian government has the nerve to throw him out.
The Aussies are an incredibly angry bunch. I’d be amazed if they don’t throw him out.
I’m glad that Scare Byrne has finally started to care about the “little guy” at borders.
When she had various ISAG fluffers on last year around this time who were waxing lyrical about Australia’s border, they never mentioned that the “little guy” was being trampled on at the expense of wealthy people. Indeed, this time last year the same group of tennis players were all brought into Australia for the same tournament and were given preferential entry to managed quarantine at the expense of thousands of Australians who were left stranded abroad because of limited spots in hotel quarantine. Wealthier Australians were also given exemptions to come and go from Australia (general citizens and residents were not allowed to leave) for “economic reasons”. Movie stars were also allowed to quarantine at home on specific occasions. Many with dying relatives were unable to get back in on time due to particularly zealous restrictions in some States at times and the costs of it but they were just the riff raff and they were protecting the “Bio State”.
Australia did all of this because they were keeping the masses “entertained” whilst trampling on a minority of people’s fundamental rights, a very dangerous and despicable attitude of a nation state that Australia were not alone in pursuing but were masters at. It is to Ireland’s great shame that we tried to copy this for a few weeks.
That is has taken Djokovic’s vaccination status for Claire to he alerted to these border issues is hilarious. The “Bio State” has replaced the Nation State in several countries now such as New Zealand, Japan, China and some of South East Asia.
Is it still essentially a legal decision or or political one now? It will come down to what the stubby chugging Alf Stewart cohort thinks then
I’m taking names of the lads who were all for the zero tolerance at borders approach.
They were right to refuse him entry but caved in and flip flopped. Useless flip flopping Aussie bastards.
This chap has become the latest Nelson Mandela for the internet right wing, it’s actually hilarious how easy it is to become a martyr for these lunatics
It’s a political decision now. The Minister for Immigration has the right seemingly to revoke the visa. Morrison is no doubt seizing things up and seeing what way the wind and public opinion is blowing. He’s got a general election coming up.
Yesterday was a PR disaster, but what has emerged since is that there serious question marks over the information provided by Novak to get his medical exemption and visa. If they were to buck him out, it’s not really a case of someone who’s 100% bona fide there.
