Sad to see the fragrant Camilla Giorgi get knocked out

Stan hammered in straight sets. He should have skipped the tournament. Nowhere near fit on return after long injury lay off.

The reigning champion is two sets up.

He couldn’t, could he ?

Big ask at 36 and a half. The Great Man has gone a break down in the 3rd. Breaks straight back. 3-3 now in the 3rd.

It would be some achievement to get to the last 4, never mind win the thing

Would love to see del potro win this. Wawrinka was nuts to comeback for this. Should have pulled out and played a few of the lesser tournaments after this and then look at indian wells and miami to get back in time for a serious attempt at the French.

I can see Djokovic winning this.

3rd Round Draw

Rafael Nadal (1) –v- Damir Dzumhur (28)
Diego Schwartzman (24) –v- Alexandr Dolgopolov
Pablo Carreno Busta (10) –v- Gilles Muller (23)
Ryan Harrison –v- Marin Cilic (6)

Grigor Dimitrov (3) –v- Andrey Rublev (30)
Nick Kyrgios (17) –v- Jo Wilfred Tsonga (15)
Kyle Edmund –v Nikoloz Basilashvili
Andrea Seppi –v- Ivo Karlovic

Dominic Thiem (5) –v- Adrian Mannarino
Maximilian Marterer –v- Tennys Sandgren
Novak Djokovic (14) –v- Albert Ramos-Vinolas (21)
Hyeon Chung –v- Alexander Zverev (4)

Julian Benneteau –v- Fabio Fognini (25)
Tomas Berdych (19) –v- Juan Martin del Potro (12)
Marton Fucsovics –v- Nicolas Kicker
Richard Gasquet (29) –v- Roger Federer (2)

You would expect all the higher seeds to come through those matches. The only higher ranked seed I see going out is Tsonga to Kyrgios.

@Little_Lord_Fauntleroy where do we stand with Kyrgios mate ?

Kyrgios and Tsonga sounds like a ding dong battle.

Kyrgios beats Tsonga 7-6 4-6 7-6 7-6

Talk about a tight match.

Berdych cruising home in straight sets against Del Potro.

Zverev gone as well which makes things easier for Djokovic who looks comfortable in his game a set and a break up.

Federer and Gasquet up next.

Federer Djokovic semi looks very likely as the tricky opponents have all fallen. Thiem and Berdych would be the trickiest to get past but you would expect them not to cause too many problems.

Gasquet doing his usual folding job against the big 4.

In 14 previous slam meeeting with Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Murray he has never won a game.

He’s never even taken a set off Nadal, Federer or Djokovic in their 9 grand slam meetings prior to today. It’s an embarrassing record for a guy who has pretty much been a top 20 mainstay over the last decade.

Highlights how the supposed strength of this era is grossly exaggerated when the likes of Gasquet have survived towards the higher end of the seeds for so long. Tsonga and Berdych there as well for the over a decade now and neither has got within an asses roar of winning a Grand Slam. Throw in the appalling state of tennis in its two traditional powerhouses of the US and Australia this century.

Tsonga and Berdych to be fair have been able to put it up to the top players and on their day are capable or toppling them. Berdych has beaten Federer at Wimbledon and the US, he has beaten Nadal in Australia, he has beaten Djokovic at Wimbledon twice. His record stacks up fairly well against the top players that he can compete and beat them.

Tsonga has done likewise, he has beaten Federer at Wimbledon and Roland Garros, he has beaten Djokovic in Australia, he has beaten Nadal in Australia.

These guys have proven themselves to be able to match the top players.

Gasquet on the other hand is cannon fodder who is easily brushed aside, he has got routed anytime he has faced Nadal, Federer or Djokovic. Berdych would have won a number of slams in the Agassi/Sampras era you would suspect as would Tsonga.

Federer completed a straight sets win vs Gasquet.

He couldn’t, could he ??

Nadal in a real battle here against Schwartzman. He’s not playing well at all.

Big break for Nadal, he had saved five break point in the previous game.

Another double break points saved by Nadal and he needs one more hold of serve to advance.
