Sir, – It was 1976. I was a trainee hotel manager working at what was then the Great Southern Hotel, Parknasilla. I was working in the kitchen along with another trainee, Terry McCoy, from Skerries. All the senior chefs were German, including the head chef. We all watched the Germany-England match in the staff room.
My friend and I felt we should support England. We did that, with lots of shouting from both sides. England won.
The German chefs were very disappointed.

He surely means 66. They hardly played each other in a big match in the 70s id say
I wouldn’t go writing a nothing letter to the paper without checking my facts first. Let’s be honest, I wouldn’t go writing a letter to the paper at all. It seems to be the reserve of cranks and simpletons.

The father smoked Aftons as well. Tried No 6 for a while after they stopped selling them. Quit shortly after.

Out of pure conicidence, my mother was telling me today she did a short stint working in Parknasilla during a bank strike (she thinks this was late 1970). I asked her there were the chefs German and she confirmed they were. But that’s six years prior to me man’s story.

Quite possibly 1976. Bank strike for 4 months or so in the summer.
