The Tom Ryan Appreciation Thread

Timber Tom they used to call him.

It is only fair and proper that i address the issue of Eamonn Cregan all ireland win as Offaly manager.Bar the psychological affects it had on Limerick hurling i fail to see how it makes Cregan a better or more succesful Limerick manager than Tom Ryan.Walter Smith won a shit load of league titles with Glasgow Rangers.David Moyes has never won so much as a sausage as a manager.Yet if someone tried to put forward an argument to you that Walter Smith was a better and more successful Everton manager than David Moyes you’d be ringing up for the men in the white coats fairly lively!

Can i have 5 euros meteor call credit and a box of fags please?Well well well Mister Centra would you not admit that i have made a few valid points about Tom Ryan on this thread? The last thing either of us want is for me to make a big scene on my next trip to that Centra on William Street.

Oh wait hang on a second is it the Centra near the Limerick Sports Store or the one up by Gleesons you work in!

Apparently Tom referred to Thugby FM in not very flattering terms a short while back on East Limerick radio (never heard of them)? Can anyone clear this up for me lads or maybe give a link?

The legend speaks a lot of sense in the Examiner. Good man Tom. PMU, take note.

Missing out on promotion ‘disaster’ for Limerick, says Tom Ryan

Ex-Limerick manager Tom Ryan has described the county failure to get out of Division 1B as “a major setback”.

In a bitterly disappointing four days for the county, TJ Ryan’s side lost to Offaly in the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday which, combined with other results, ended their hopes of promotion to Division 1A for another season.

Kilmallock were outclassed by 12 points against Ballyhale Shamrocks in the All-Ireland club final on Tuesday. Ryan labelled Kilmallock’s defeat as “a non-event” while he expressed concern about the lack of progress in the league. “It’s a huge disappointment for Limerick but it hasn’t sunk in yet within the county,” he said of their unsuccessful promotion bid.

“It’s a disaster for Limerick, not to be campaigning in Division 1A. We really need that because of the quality of the opposition and the standard of games. We’re missing out on that and I think there was a bit of complacency. We were beginning to believe what was being said about us in the media, that we were automatic winners. To tell you the truth, I thought we would have had enough experience, after what we showed in last year’s championship, to be able to win that division.

“The draw against Waterford was a setback, there was a bit of luck in beating Wexford and nobody saw the result against Offaly coming. It’s not good to again be where we’ve been the last few years.”

From a Division 1B base the last two seasons, Limerick have beaten Tipperary twice on the way to reaching All-Ireland semi-finals and capturing a Munster title. But Ryan doesn’t want to hear that the lack of Division 1A hurling this year won’t dent the county’s All-Ireland aspirations. “Those are excuses,” he says. “If you look at the way Cork have benefitted from playing in Division 1A, you can see what good it would do Limerick as well. The likes of Tipperary are moving further away from Limerick. I’m a great believer in winning and confidence being built in winning. If you’re in any other realm you’re in make-believe. There isn’t a whole lot of room for that in hurling.”

Although he believes Limerick should have topped Division 1B regardless, Ryan does suggest they, like Kilkenny, haven’t been helped by being without some of their club-tied stars. “The club championship has had a direct bearing on this. If you look at the club final and the hype and the bullshit that went on here in Limerick for the last month, it was unbelievable. The whole thing got carried away.

“When your county team is without your county champions’ players, it definitely weakens your position and you can see the same with Kilkenny who haven’t had their Ballyhale players and are now in a relegation final. There is a direct relationship between the two at this time.

“I’ve had a bee in my bonnet about this for awhile and I think the club season should finish in the calendar year. It has become a factor for counties. Then look at the poor quality of the finals. There is too much emphasis on St Patrick’s Day, too much hype and the hurling is not living up to its billing.”

What a scoop by FOTF Fogarty

Good man Tom, about time someone came out and said it. Whacker Ryan has got off very, very lightly in wake of a humiliating result against Offaly and finishing third in the also rans league.

Oh look who voted my post dumb. You fucking gimp. Must kill you to see Tom being right again and again. Too many in Limerick GAA for the wrong reasons who detest Tom and his ways. He is far from perfect but I would rather see him there than PMU and any of his hangers on.

Hon Tom.
signing in. Tom Ryan once gave me a lift when I was thumbing from town out to Ballysimon, on the go from school.

Couldn’t understand a word he said.
Can’t bate the CBS slang for dossing school

While non promotion is not a complete disaster imo, I think he is right in suggesting the club championship should be out of the way before
the end of the calendar year.

If Tom could add Steve McDonagh to his back room team along with Ciaran I think we can still do it this year.

TOM Ryan has warned the Limerick hurlers that it’s time to get “back to basics” ahead of the All Ireland SHC Qualifier against Westmeath on Sunday.

The Ballybrown man, who led Limerick to two All Ireland final appearances in the mid-90s, managed the Westmeath hurlers in 2004 and 2005.

“There has to be a reaction to the non-performance against Tipperary,” said Ryan.

“Not demeaning Westmeath but from a Limerick perspective its a big game in so far as they have to produce a fairly constructive win.”

As Limerick bid to bounce back from the disappointing loss to Tipperary, Sunday’s qualifier game has been confirmed for a 2.00 start in Mullingar.

“Their footballer’s win will have given Westmeath a boost and they will be thinking if our footballers can beat Meath, then we can put it up to Limerick. They have Michael Ryan, who did well with Waterford, in charge and I know that he has pencilled in this game for Westmeath to have a right crack off,” outlined Ryan.

The former Limerick manager believes TJ Ryan’s side can respond to the “wake-up call” of the Tipperary “non-event”.

“They have to cut away the cobwebs and go for the juggler early on. There is no excuses anymore and they have got to get the show back on the road.”

But Ryan is not for wholesale changes to the starting team.

“Maybe the wake-up call came at the right time. With the right thinking on the sideline and the right attitude it can be done. We played for 10-minutes after half time and showed what they can produce. But why can’t they do that for 70-minutes?”

While Ryan fully expects Limerick to overcome the Westmeath challenge, he wants to see indicators positives in the performance .

“Mullingar is tight and they will throw everything at Limerick. Limerick will not want to be complacent and take it for granted - they have to go out and lower the blade,” urged Ryan.

“It’s a mental thing and its very important to get back down to basics and to hard work. It’s an ideal game to back on track but they are unknown and have nothing to lose,” warned Ryan ahead of Sunday.

Someone had to say it.

I thought it would have been Project X

Good advice from Tom.

An unchanged 15 is the best decision Teege can make.
