Twitter is unanimous in its disgust at the treatment of McStay. Mayo board are “a bunch of spivs” says one national journalist.
‘Spiv’ is a word i’ll always associate with Eamon Dunphy. A ‘rinkydink’ manager is another one of his beauties.
Jimmy sloyans silence is deafening
Malachy Clerkin: Mayo’s decision to oust Kevin McStay was fair enough but the way they did it was foul
Moran only came good in the twilight of his career for some reason. Was exceptional for a few years for sure.
Wasn’t he a wing back/forward at the start - did his best work when conducting the inside line alright.
Wouldnt say twilight, but he certainly didnt shine right out the gate. He did wreck coming on against Dublin in the infamous Ciaran Mc/Hill 16 warmup game, and really turned himself inside out from there as a forward.
Not sure if serious
, Sloyans head will explode all over Paddy Powers if this is true.Who was the last player manager in the Gaa Micko?
Val Daly in the mid 90s done it I’m sure.
Larry Tompkins was player-manager of Cork in 1998. Not 1997 when he was plain old manager.
Was there a cavan or monaghan lad that stepped in for a while recently?
Raymond Galligan was appointed in Cavan and immediately retired from playing, I’d say that is who you are thinking of.
Yeah i remember that now,was Tompkins still playing in 98 @cheasty
Tompkins wasn’t intending to play but his form in club football was so good he had to pick himself against Kerry in 1998.
If true, sounds like a lad who’s bought firmly into his own hype.
What percentage of the player/manager incidents at intercounty has brought success? Would we be talking less than 1%?
The ‘I drink beer, I would have the skills to run a pub’ type of thinking.
Edit: Sorry, was thinking of the instances of a player retiring from intercounty playing and starting managing the team briskly after retiring
I don’t think he’s said anything in the public eye since that infamous video that must’ve surfaced first around 2016. He was caught unawares on camera that time too. I’d like to hear his thoughts on the chaos of the intervening period.
Mayo GAA issue apology to Kevin McStay
Jul 8, 2025 | 8:34 am
The Executive Board of Mayo GAA has officially apologised to Kevin McStay for the statement released following his dismissal as manager of the senior football team.
Last month, McStay was relieved of his duties as senior boss after three years, and the wording of the announcement by Mayo GAA was widely criticised.
At a meeting last night, between the Executive and Mayo club representatives, Vice Chairperson Michael Diskin read out a statement on behalf of Mayo GAA.
In the statement, the Executive “express clearly and unreservedly that it was never the intention of the Executive to cause offence.
“The manner and tone of the original communication didn’t adequately reflect the deep respect and appreciation we hold for Kevin.
“For this, we offer our heartfelt apologies.”
The county board went on to describe McStay’s leadership as “nothing short of exemplary”, and wished both him and the extended management team the very best for the future.
Finnerty is hated in Mayo it would appear. For missing a sitter in 1989 final (even though he scored a goal) but mainly for his apparent support for Galway now with his son playing for them.
