The waxing lyrical about the issues with the Mayo Footballing Psyche Thread

I watched an OTB interview with McStay during lockdown and he came across really well in it.

Mayo football people over the years have always had a lovely manner of speaking. That clipped, clear Mayo accent prioritises perfect grammar and clarity of delivery. Even their pub loudmouths are a cut above in their delivery.

Its a brilliant accent.

I was behind some roaster from Crossmolina or somewhere at the 2019 semi final against Dublin and early in the game there was some alteration involving MDMA. Yer man stands up and in the top of his pitch perfect Mayo voice goes,

“Is that Michael Darragh McCauley I see involved? Why am i not surprised?”

There was a stunned silence from the Dubs around.

A friend of mine from college was up at home a few years back and my father thought he had a posh accent. I told him that was just the typical Mayo accent. John Maughan is the epitome of that. Statesman like.

Trying to remember who @Lazarus and @thedancingbaby were saying were nailed on Mayo management

Tremendous. Like the expression of an exasperated schoolteacher on a school tour as the classroom messer performs a roadshow.

The Mayo accent has a natural poshness to it, in no way feigned. It’s like an Irish version of the BBC received pronunciation accent. Even the lads with the exaggerrated regional variations who would pronounce it “accshent”, they shtill have that lovely clarity to their voice, well, jusht about.

John Maughan is the king of clarity and tone. Jauntier than a west of Ireland jaunting car.

The Galway football accent would be of a similar genre but not as pronounced.

I would have no respect for McStay, O’Rourke or Duignan as Sunday game panelists. But i would have massive respect for them for walking away from the trough to walk the walk. I know they’ll get a few bob from it too. But thats some hardship to take on considering the soft ride you are walking away from. Its not a logical decision. Its only because you love your county and you think you can make things better. I love that. Thats the essecence of the GAA. Making a stupid decision, out of love

It’s gruffer and more downbeat.

Did Duignan not keep his snout buried with the fact that he missed an important Offaly championship game to commentate on some no mark game?

Do you think they’d have won had he togged out?

Ah he put his head above the parapet for fellas to take shots at him, and he was firmly ensconced in the bunker.
There is no win for them really. If they are shit they will be hard pressed to get back on the gravy train

It’s a very promising ticket but Liam McHale is absolutely despised by some very key players. Things will get very tasty, it has to be said.

He was a very good player but he strikes me as a complete sausage.

The south Mayo, north and east Galway and south Roscommon accents are pretty much indistinguishable. A finely tuned ear might be able to tell them apart but you’d have to know the area.

Another Galway manager who takes Dublin development coaching funding to settle online scores with @maroonandwhite

You’d think a fellow basketball player would have appreciated some of the complimentary things said by aul Liam in the past few years.
