šŸŒ¬ The Weather Thread part 2

The summer of 1985 was pretty abysmal. The mean temperature for September was almost 1 degree warmer than August. The most noteworthy event though occurred on the night of 25th/26th July. The synoptic situation at midnight showed a shallow low pressure system (1006hPa) off the south east coast. Pressure was falling slowly as an airflow of continental origin tended to displace the moist Atlantic air over the country. As a result widespread and spectacular thunderstorm activity occurred throughout the evening of the 25th and continued overnight. This storm is remembered by many as the worst in living memory.

**Much of the spine of Ireland was affected (from Cork to up to Tyrone/Armagh). Kilkenny was one of the worst affected. A feature of the storm was a spell of very heavy rain and violent hail of 30/60 mins duration. This burst arrived in Kilkenny at about midnight. There were frequent cloud to ground strikes and just when you thought it had passed a new cell arrived and it began again. This continued for several hours. In all 49.7mm of rain was recorded during the storm and there was much damage to crops, buildings and many farm animals were killed by the lightning.

2013, 2014,2018, 2020, 21, 22 and 23 so far all seems like incredibly dry summers.

Bit of a trend here.

We always get a consistent amount of annual rainfall. Those dry years had incredibly wet spells at some point

Mayorstone :policewoman:t3: have been informed, is there a statute of limitations for :green_apple: theft?

Yep the distribution of rain is changing but that has a massive impact on things over time.

They caught me one dayā€¦ The others scrambled and i was left at the top of the tree. They were grand about it in fairnessā€¦

Weā€™d tip out the tracks to cratloe also and skin a few farmerā€™s orchards on the way back from the sand dunes.

Sculling an orchard was a big thrill back in the day. Kids couldnā€™t be bothered now I suppose.

Jesus noā€¦it would be alien to them Iā€™d say.

Kids these days either wouldnā€™t try or would spit out a tangy pippin or beauty bath

Slogging apples was a great late summer pastime

If you found a pear tree or some plums with the apples

Down our way it was the Protestants who had orchards so ithere was a fair bit of Robinhoodery and leveling up involved in the act.

Sure theyā€™ve bred all the taste out of apples.

Mostly nuns down by us, Ursulines, Bessborough and Ardfoyle all had fine orchards

Dingle is going to be like villamoura in ten years time

Pre points system I think. You could go back to repeat just 1 or 2 subjects back then.

There was a points system but it was different

Lads its glorious this morning. In Ballina-Killaloe for a couple of days. Came down last night, to my horror on arrival realised we were staying in Ballina. Made sure I slept on the Killaloe side of the bed.
Just after a nice trek, sitting into a bit of brunch now. Probably hit Cashel, tried of Limerick so a change is on the cards.
