It’s my human right to live on a flood plain. It’s all the gubberments fault.
@KinvarasPassion - are farmers getting payments to keep lands in grass? The lack of forestry and scrub plants is a big contributor to surface water run-off, which leads to flooding. I suspect EU and government policy is contributing to this. What’s your take, as a man of the land?
I believe they are, local farmers have done massive work in clearing scrub land around my place in recent years, big machines in etc. and as as you know, the farmers wouldn’t be doing that unless they were getting a nice payment for it.
Thought so. This is a real clusterfuck, and is only going to get worse. Trees and plants prevent water run-off because they hold and use more water than farms or grasslands. When rainwater runs from the watershed into the rivers faster, the flood impact is much greater. Concrete (as per Clonmel) is not the answer. Aforestation and sensible farming practices are. Millions were spent on raising the main Galway-Limerick road at Labane - has it fixed the issue? Eh - no! Closed due to flooding.
There are no grants for reclaiming land. There were in the 70s and 80s but it stopped in 1985. However if you wish to increase your beef/milk or lamb output you need as much grass as possible so hense the continued clearing of scrub.
There are generous grants for planting trees however but uptake is only really an option on very marginal land. Food gives you better bang for your buck.
As far as I know any land clearing you can claim upto 100 percent tax back.
Same as any business expense sure…
They stopped dredging the rivers to keep the crusties happy.
They built on flood plains.
They drained the bogs.
They leveled the farm land.
What the fuck do they expect
Deforestation in Slieve Aughty is also one of the reason for the water coming into the Peterswell basin so quick.
Fucking Windmills. I knew they’d be involved
Even when it was the bears I knew it was them
piracy in clonlara as peoples flooded houses getting robbed. also matt cooper having massive difficulty pronouncing labane @anon7035031 and now the traffic girl is following his lead.
No grants but for map acres to be claimable for your (earned) entitlements they have to be farmable, ie a crop or grass. Trees, hedges, roadways etc are deducted from your total farmable lands.
If you see someone reclaiming land in more recent time it is generally due to wanting to improve the production and reduce the spread of weeds, most old permanent pasture isn’t viable unless used as part of an expansive/low input system. No good for a dairy farmer for example.
And the added problem with the approach taken by many farmers in controlling weeds (based on the pressure to retain Single Farm Payments) is that they spray MCPA and other herbicides. The end result is elevated pesticide levels in our drinking water, which will have long term health issues. The flooding ensures these pesticide make it into the water bodies much quicker.
Yeah that does happen but in really small samples, MCPA is primarily used to control rushes here. Little if anything else.
Glyphosate is the Chem of choice.
Out of interest is a lot of your (accurate) knowledge on this derived from the US side?
Chalk and cheese between here and the states
Not sure what they do in the states pal. Was referring to Ireland and our war against rushes
There are (Limerick) posters on here who think its Lebane, perhaps confusing it with Lebanon.
No wonder Enda wasn’t bothered to leave Mayo.
Sick cunts!
