Stoke has a strangely distinctive accent. It’s a bit like the “old” Liverpool accent, the sort the Beatles had, as opposed to the more modern, broader Scouse accent.
The Scouse accent has a peculiar geographical distinction that doesn’t extend very far outside Liverpool at all. It basically stops at the city limits and the likes of St. Helen’s, which is in Merseyside, Widnes and Runcorn don’t have it, and have accents which are far more similar to Lancashire accents instead, although overspill of Scousers into these places means the accent is seeping out of the city a little bit now.
Dublin and Liverpool are quite alike, I think, in how their respective city accents have mutated over the years, although there are more factors at play in how different Dublin accents have developed, ie. I don’t think Liverpool has a large cohort of people who have modelled their accents on a 1990s US television comedy programme.
I always marvelled at the difference between the broad Wigan accent and the scouse accent in Skemersdale 8 miles down the road.
I’ve learned on this forum over the years that there’s a surprising amount of knowledge about British rugby league from circa 1987 to circa 1995.
A golden era for the game.

I was a big fan of Leeds for a short time, specifically during their run to the final of the Regal Trophy in 1987-88 when Garry Schofield was in his pomp and they were playing in Tipperary-style colours. I was very disappointed when they lost the final to Alex Murphy’s St. Helen’s. Despite them being Merseyside’s team, I never, ever warmed to the Saints.
Hanley and Schofield then teamed up at Leeds for a couple of years around 94/95 after Hanley left Wigan, but they couldn’t stop Wigan in two Challenge Cup finals.
