Things I learned today (Part 1)

Donā€™t mind them Fagan. Most of them are probably arguing over whether Hotel California or Sweet Home Alabama is the greatest song ever.

Sweet Home Alabama for me, mate.

Thereā€™s some lads incapable of spelling fuck and cunt etc properly on the Internet.

There are 25 per cent less people in their 20s in Ireland today than there were in 2009. And itā€™s not all down to emigration. Looks like a lot of lads on TFK are Irelandā€™s baby boomers. Interesting point about the sportsmen too.

Dunno bud, their accents donā€™t sound all that similar to me.
The town of Athy in South Kildare seems to be full of absolute dregs of society .

All is forgiven Mountmellick.
A cesspit of fucking vermin that place. Estates like Clonmullion and the one beside it are absolute ghettos swarming in scumbags.

Ah I know, I genuinely hate the fucking place. I played a match down there once, when we got back to the bus some knackers had robbed the bus driver with stanley knives, unbelievable shit.
Itā€™s that filthy Laois influence rubbing off on it, too close to the border, its like getting a societal STD off a toilet seat.

Seriously though what would be the explanation for one town like that being rougher than another? I thought Kildare was a relatively salubrious spot

Kildare salubrious? You havenā€™t been in Kildare much then. Athy was once a busy thriving town but has generally been bypassed for the most part of late, I imagine that would be the main reason. It always struck me as a place that needs a damn good wash.

North Kildare is the definition of commuter belt, towns like Maynooth, Celbridge and Leixlip would all be nice enough without having any actual development to match the population increase. The three big towns in the middle of the county of Naas, Newbridge and Kildare Town would be atypical midlands towns. Newbridge is probably the best developed town but its not Foxrock by any means, Naas pretty much the same. Kildare is rough enough, but nowhere near Athy. The view that Kildare is wealthy would be based in the countryside villages and townlands where there are some huge houses and big farms.
Athy is just an anomaly, I donā€™t really know why. Its a shithole and attracts universal hatred. Thereā€™s some god awful council estates and there is nothing at all for young people to do except hang around, something which has been perpetuating for decades, which might explain it.

As Kev would say ā€˜Iā€™m not picking a fight hereā€™ but I never really know what this ā€˜nothing for young people to do*ā€™ stuff is all about. Surely athy has as many sports clubs and the likes as any similarly sized town?

*a bowling alley used always be the mythical cure all for this when we were young lads.

Yeah I donā€™t know, I was just suggesting it. Even the lads on sports teams were always dog rough and horrible cunts save a few from outside the town.
