Mo Mowlam had a very close escape with Ted Bundy when teaching in the US.
She spent six years in the United States, teaching briefly at the University of Wisconsin in 1977 after getting her doctorate and then taking up a post in the political science department at Florida State University. She was, as ever, a popular member of staff and had a happy time in Tallahassee - apart from two chilling incidents.
The first occurred as a result of her typical disregard for her personal safety. She lived in a seedy area of the town that was handy for the university campus, and nearly became the victim of a man who, it transpired, was apparently stalking her. She escaped unhurt when he broke into her apartment while she was there, but weeks later the psychopathic serial killer Ted Bundy murdered two women students on the nearby campus. He was caught and eventually executed having confessed to 23 murders, in all of which he stalked his attractive women victims. Mowlam was always convinced that he was the man at her back door.
