Cape Verdean people mainly speak Cape Verdean Creole (Kriolu) in everyday life, while Portuguese is the country’s official language.
In fairness, it’s for all intents and purposes a heavily accented dialect of Portuguese with its own local peculiarities. It would be like talking to someone from Glasgow, Alabama or the hood in Compton.
Pidgins, Creoles, dialects and distinct languages aren’t really black and white, more are a continuum with an awful lot of grey.
Cape Verdean and a Portuguese person would be able to converse in Kriolu and Portuguese like?
They would get enough of the gist to communicate if they need to.
Now a Portuguese person eavesdropping on two Cspe Verdeans in full blown local Kirolu would be missing half of what’s going on, but no more so than a fella from the hood listening to two Glaswegians going at it, or vice versa.
I speak fluent Spanish, but for the life of me I’ve never been able to understand two Cubans talking among themselves. The accent, syntax, idioms, and slang throw me for a loop. But I if I have to I can communicate with them, as we’ll find a common ground. That’s the nature of how how languages evolve.
