From the programme on RTE 2 at the moment 2 beauties. Ireland were invited to participate in the 1930 World Cup but had to decline because they had no money and Ireland were the first team to beat England in England.

First foreign / over seas team to beat them at home afaik. Think they had lost a few games at home to Scotland at that stage.

Just looking it up there now and they lost a ball of games at home to Scotland, a handful to wales and a couple to Ireland before the Republic of Ireland beat them at Goodison in 1949.

You’re right actually they did say foreign too so my bad.

Rule 27 in all its magnificence. Abolished in 1971 by which time the incorrigible and contrarian Rossies had christened the county ground after him.
Limerick’s late hero Mick Mackey had himself appointed to the vigilante committee* in order to watch the dreaded soccer…

  • I kid you not - that’s what it was called.

They done right as well. Ah backward clowns. I always thought it amazing that Nickey Rackard never got banned. He was playing rugby in Dublin around the early days he was playing for Wexford. What a loss he would have been, he must have had pals in that committee.

The ban had its uses

You’re close enough, but it was rubby that Mackey was a fan of, and it was the ‘Vigilance’ committee

Thanks for that, we were always told it was the vigilante committee but clearly I was misinformed. A good job that you’re here as a sort of a vigilante to correct errant posters when they resort to posting ‘nearly right’ anecdotes. :+1:
