Because Iâve taken on the role of U2 superfan Iâve listened to the entire set while out walking the dog.
You youngsters wonât remember that âCâmon everybodyâ was the Self Aid song, played for about 90 seconds.
Not sure why they played Maggieâs farm, not a song I like.
Pride and Sunday Bloody Sunday were powerful.
After Maggieâs farm Bono was told they had time for one more, the chant goes up âwe want Bad, we want Badâ
They played Bad in full and during the outro he sand the first verse of candle in the wind with the lyrics altered for the occasion âthe grace to hold ourselves, while those around you fallâ, then he led the audience in a single chorus of doop de doop from Walk on the wild side
They played Maggies Farm as a reference to emigration. Maggies Farm being intended as a reference to England. Maggie was prime minister at that time. I ainât going to work on Maggies Farm no more translating as people shouldnât have to go to England to get work.
If I recall, U2 were touring for Amnesty International at the time. The Conspiracy of Hope tour, which also featured Springsteen, Sting and Youssou NâDour. Each band/artist only played a short set of about 25 minutes and the set at Self Aid was the exact one they played every night on the Amnesty Tour.
