Things that are right

What are you getting at here?

I suppose it’s been 20 years since he did anything worth talking about it. Quite a contribution to the record however, taking down Barings. As self-serving as Leeson’s version of events may be, the schadenfreude is fantastic is that documentary.

You’d wonder how many dogs they got through before they got that one right.

Racing Car Jumps over the Luckiest DOG and lands in Bolivia

Where did it take off from?

Been meaning to post this. We parked up East of croker for the hurling semi, in a carpark out near the sea and walked in. Had a brilliant afternoon. The kids were asking for a flag, but I had no euros, and there was no bank machine. Met up with the pal who does the boat for the bay outside the Davin entrance, who was standing there with two hats, two wool necklaces, two flags and two hooter things for the kids. They absolutely loved it. He thought it was the best game of anything he had ever been at, and said he was ashamed he’d never been to a game before.
Anyhow, point being we were sat just behind the goals at the Davin end, and toward the end, Galway were defending a free, and John Hanbury was on the line. I told the kids he was a neighbour (he lives about a mile from where we got the land). They were transfixed with this, and kept asking could they meet him. He wouldn’t know us from Adam, but one evening, after they had dinner and were in their pyjamas, they were asking about him again, so I put jumpers on them, screwed up a bit of courage, and drove up to his family house (I only knew which row it was in, and had to knock on a couple of doors to find it)
I knocked on and his mother answered. I explained I’d grown up there and hoped to be a neighbour again, and was home from England and that we’d been at the match, and the kids were in the car. She was delighted as he happened to be home. She went out and brought the kids in, and John and his brother Colin, leading light in the u 21’s signed their caps, took photos, played with them and chatted for nearly an hour. Their ma gave us drinks, and it was magic. As we were leaving, the two lads came out after us and passed to the kids a signed hurl by the Galway team that they had. They would take nothing in return, and made me promise to call up for a puc about next time we are home.
The kids have only taken off the caps to sleep since, and have taken it in turns to sleep with the hurl.
We did absolutely loads of stuff this holiday, went up Croagh, cycled the greenaway, swam in the sea, it was brilliant, but the highlight without doubt when I asked my daughter was the trip to the Hanbury’s.
Like mick last year playing football at Crossmaglen, you couldn’t buy such a thing.
Had a grand chat with John about the game. He was really disappointed, and felt the two injuries disrupted them, but had no complaints.
Galway are there or thereabouts, and that’s all you can ask.
It was just a great experience. If my two grow up like them I’d be delighted.
Sounds twee to some, but it’s hard to convey how nice it was, and what a great example they are and how kind and how humble.
I’d take that over an all Ireland any day of the week.

@flattythehurdler you win a"sound post" award yet again

Has your wife come round yet to regarding you as sound again?

Well after filling her diesel car with unleaded on the way back to the boat, hence missing boat etc etc, I don’t think I’ll be getting any soon.

Fuck it I just let out a snort of laughter there. You are some man.

Had a bit of a snigger at this earlier. Them Galway lads were very confident.
I wonder what the unforeseen circumstances were. …

You reckon ? Maybe it was a few over confident Galway fans that booked ahead thinking they’d be there.

Overconfident? Doubt it. Hopeful maybe.
