I run in cycle lanes all the time (against the traffic). Tarmac is easier on the legs than concrete. Of course, when I see a cyclist approach me, I will jump back onto the footpath.

I know a former midwife who worked in maternity hospital in Dublin. She saw several delivery room surprises like what flatly described above.
