De La Salle was the big boarding school for boys in Waterford, Ursuline for the girls. Mostly farmers children from South Kilkenny.
The ones that were from relatively close by, 20 miles or less, always struck me as odd. Way back in the day I could see that making sense when travel was a bit harder, but being within half hour drive of your child and not seeing them for weeks at a time was weird carry on.
I’d equally say that generation would have thought it odd that lads fire their one year old kids into crèche so they can go for a run and a coffee.
If I had a day off school my father would send me to some sort of work somewhere, in case I went soft or something. It wasn’t unusual for me to be landed to a field away from home with just a briar knife. Food and water optional.
Those old school farmer types were born into hardship and knew nothing else, incredibly far removed from modern day parenting.
No different to one’s local gaa club I’d say
Absolutely no excuses for underperforming in the marathon again this year, if I drop the younger lad to crèche tomorrow & collect him at Halloween.
Bruff had a convent for girls boarding that loads of farmers used to send their daughters there who wouldn’t be any use at home on the farm in the way. I know loads of girls who went there my own age it sounds like something from the 50s
It shut around twenty years ago I think
Limerick FC bought ít / were to buy it to use as a training base a good few years back. I’m not sure what came of it.
Think there was an academy to be run out of it/is being run? Thought heard mention anyway
The priests molesting and abusing most of them would have passed the time at the weekend I guess
the real victims were the lads the priests wouldn’t even touch
I knew a boarder in Kieran’s who was from Clara ffs! But there were others from Tipp, Tramore, kilmacow, Mallorca, and Mountbellew.
He hardly hurled did he?
Jesus, that man has children you know, oh what, you do know
Full of asylum seekers
Is that a statement of fact or a question?
What a story…harbo and aaaar kid
