This Is England

The Broken Britain thread is already in place, fucknuckle.

That’s lovely, but this thread is about ENGLAND, pal.

As I drove around England the last few days, I came to the realization that I know little of the geography of the place. I’d know pretty well every nook and cranny in Ireland but over here every road sign had the name of a town village or hamlet that I was seeing for the first time. I concluded that the only places I know of in England are those that have football league teams, rugby union and league teams, racecourses, places that have had notorious murders, and Alderley Edge and Didsbury.

That place Didsbury is full of complete wankers. How do you know this place?

Was it like a foreign country?

It was.

Youd know the places named after sauces as well

I’d be the same. You’d know a lot of the names but you’d have no real idea where they were. This especially goes for the counties. This is despite being there loads of times on bidness. You’d never holiday in England, maybe that’s part of it.

Now to be fair, my geography of, say, Hungary wouldn’t be great either.

Hungary isn’t a neighbouring country that we share a common history with though.

True dat. That’s probably the surprise when you get over there and discover you haven’t a notion where anything is.

Scotland I’d know better. Wales I wouldn’t even know where to start. Holyhead I guess.

I was over for work a year or two ago and got the train around between cities few times. London Bristol Cardiff Birmingham Manchester

Realised until I checked I had no idea how far apart each one was so that for example Cardiff to Manchester was about same as Dublin Cork

Planning a trip to Cornwall. Anybody been?

I was at a wedding in Somerset 2 years ago and it was a beautiful part of the world. Real idyllic part of the world, very different to the rest of what I have seen in the UK.

Stayed in a chalet in a campsite the night before the wedding and really enjoyed it, arrived in the dark the chalet was on the cliff side and was awoke in the morning by the sound of the waves lapping off the cliff. Chicken soup for the soul.

Yes. Stayed in Rick Steins place in Padstow a couple of years ago. Would highly recommend it. If you can help it and you plan to stay in Padstow and not travel around don’t bother hiring a car because trying to park in Padstow is a disaster.
