I’m trying to establish what you’re ok with. There are people alive who are ancestors of the people killed by revolutionaries. They’ll be offended by the name of a rural GAA team, surely you agree they should have to change their name because of that, too?
I can distinguish just fine. The club doesn’t stand for slavery now. They’ve taken a name. A cunts name and made it something better. We can’t just go around erasing the bits we don’t like out of our history, just because we don’t like it now.

If they club want to change the name they should - We dont have to go around tearing everything down as there would be no end - but the past is there to learn from and the club do have an opportunity to weigh up history and make a decision. I think all clubs named after an ‘Irish’ patriot should re-visit their name really. Sport and politics shouldnt mix and in a new united Ireland we should live in a society that is open to all.

I don’t know offhand, but it would have to go through the registrar of business names I’d imagine, if the association is set up as a limited company.
Is the whole ethos of the GAA not about community? - You’d have no issue with a club rocking up calling themselves Gemma O’Doherty Gaels despite everything that would say to the world?
