Time for the GGA to force clubs to change names?

Just Ireland? Which utopia are you living on now where there is none?

Two of them in Derry, Claudy and Glenullin. There is 10 or 12 across Ireland I reckon, Castlebar Mitchell’s are the most famous. If they are looking for alternatives then there is only 1 club named after his great friend John Martin that I know of, he was probably every bit as racist but as he never went to America he doesn’t have the same baggage.

I wont be deleting or eradicating anything – the records will show that a community came together and decided the racist values of Mitchell did not represent what they are about and decided to change their name… you’re consumed with ‘burying, eradicating, hiding’ … no one is suggesting any such thing.

if that is what the community decide to do, then away with them. if they decide to keep it for whatever reasons, away with them, would you not agree? Or would you want them then forced into changing the name.

Should we do a forensic analysis of every patron of a GAA club for any links to racism and force them into having a discussion about changing their name?

Much safer to make your club after the area,

Outside of the Saints Limerick hasStaker Wallace, Fr Casey and Gerald Griffin,
Are they all sound @Thomas_Brady did I miss any?

Edit: Pearse of course, wasn’t he a bit dodge

John Mitchell was a leading figure in the rnli despite being a mediocre swimmer

I dont think I once said anyone should be forced to do anything — if they’re happy to keep alive the memory of a staunch racist and white supremacist then good look to them.

and you’re happy to bury it under the carpet because you don’t like it. That is white privilege

There’s a John Mitchell’s GAA club in West Waterford. Exclusively Gaelic Football.

You’re throwing dirt there … you cant change a name without it not staying the same ffs. Mitchell isnt disappearing from history nor is his racist legacy - by all means leave a plaque to commemorate the change to educate people what happened … we’re on about a sporting club here that should be open to black , white, gay, straight etc. etc. etc.

I’m sure they haven’t got an exclusive policy on the members.
You started the dirt throwing and brought white privilege into it.

There’s an actual White Supremacist in the Oval Office, right now. But that’s a big hard problem that’s hard to fix. Let’s go after some GAA team in the back arse of Kerry and guilt them into changing their name. That’ll make me feel a little bit better about being white

I dont have much say in what happens in the Oval office.

And i’m not white.

you’ve fuck all say what happens in a club you have no affiliation to but you’re trying to force that narrative.

You are

I’m not trying to do anything but open your eyes.

The white supremacist is only one part of the problem when it comes to GAA club names.

run through all the GAA names you’ve a problem with and suggest alternatives. There are 2200 clubs roughly. Throw in field names and stadium names too, some of them might be offensive.

After that, maybe have a look at street names

We’ll then change all the club crests and signage and business names. Change the addresses of the stadiums and the streets names and pay for all that.

All so we can forget how brutal our past was

Are there that many clubs that honour racists and murderers that you’re getting worked up? I hadnt realized it was that bad - I thought it was a handful of clubs … just goes to show how intolerant and prejudice we are as a society.

Theres a bit of work to be done alright and it isn’t surprising that the people who are easily offended want someone else to do it and pay for it

I dont think building an inclusive society falls under being easily offended. The GAA was exclusionary for too long… discouraging people of colour from joining clubs is Jim Crow esque

Are you accusing the club of such activities?

I dont know anything about the club bar the racist lad who had a go at Ian Wright and the white supremacist they are named after.
