Tipperary v Limerick MSHC Semi-Final 2014

Richie Mc is some man to get his body(more so his arse) in between his marker and the ball,he has almost perfected it! I did an interview for Radio 1 yesterday morning for the game preview

Didn’t think it was the worst pass ever. He was after making a surging run and had a couple of players hanging off him. Dowling needed to just turn on to his right side, take a step towards goal and have a go. If anything he made life difficult for himself by heading away from goal and allowing defenders to get back. He got away with it though, managed to evade a forest of hurleys and bodies.

Looked like Gleeson was poor for it, I thought?

Were you “if our players back from injury are fit then we’ll win, and that’s an honest opingin”?

Except that wasn’t the point he was making

No I think I said about the contrasting leagues and it’s all on the day!

The yahooing from the Tipp midfielder after he won a free on 62 mins was the highlight of the day for me. Had he not acted the ape Chipp would have went 3 points up and I think would have seen it out from there.
Brave Limerick, who were always gonna win the throw ball, went up and cut the gap to one and then it was game over as Chipp shat themselves yet again. They brought on that Bourke lad again. He wasted two good chances against KK in the league final towards the end and the same yesterday. A great man to score 1-5 when your 10 points up but different story when there’s a game in the melting pot. This sums up Tipp for me. That 2010 asterix is getting more and more prominent every year now.

I just love the way they never learn over there.

But the reason Dowling had to cut back onto his left was due to Downes playing the pass wide to his left handside and almost behind him. If he had given the pass to the other side of him he could have ploughed straight on and flicked the ball home. Fair play to Dowling for getting the shot away

i had a feeling it was you, which lad were you?

The first guy I think before my pal who rightly said they were worth an auld score!

bang on the money …

Yeah it was a great finish. Cold blooded the way he turned back out and made the space for himself.

Just listened to the last couple of minutes of Liam Aherne’s commentary from yesterday. (He has it up on his twitter page.)

Good for the soul.

Jesus Christ.

The independent rating give McCarthy MOTM with a 9, Dowling also a 9 but James Ryan and Browne only 7

Well that’s just retarded

+1, a total joke.
Every Limerick player was at least a 9

Limerick – N Quaid 7; S Hickey 8, R McCarthy 9, T Condon 7; P O’Brien 7, W McNamara 7, G O’Mahony 7; J Ryan 7 P Browne 7; S Dowling 9, D O’Grady 7, D Hannon 7; G Mulcahy 6, K Downes 7, S Tobin 5. Subs: T Ryan 6 for Tobin (61), M Ryan for Mulcahy (71).

Tipperary – D Gleeson 7; C Barrett 8, Padraic Maher 8, M Cahill 8; J Barry 6, B Maher 7, C O’Mahony 6; K Bergin 6, S McGrath 6; G Ryan 8, Patrick Maher 8; J O’Dwyer 8; N McGrath 6, S Callanan 6, N O’Meara 5. Subs: L Corbett 6 for Barry (55), D Maher 6 for O’Meara (61), C O’Brien for Cahill (65), S Bourke for O’Dwyer (68), T Stapleton for S McGrath (71).

I wouldn’t pay much heed to some plum of a reporter who’s opinion is no more valid than your own.
Agree totally with you. I’m trying to think back through the game and every good bit of Tipp play I can think of Callanan was involved. Callanan seems to be the first target of Tipp supporters when things go wrong even though he did more than 4 of the other Tipp forwards.

At midfield Browne and Ryan absolutely lorded it, if Browne could shoot he’d be some player. Bergin was very poor
He was poor but he was involved in the two goals.

So here goes

Quaid; Supremely calm on the ball. Plucked one from over Lars head in the second half as well. Haven’t seen a replay of the goals but on first viewing he couldn’t do much about it. 8/10
Hickey; Was very worried about him pre match but he was flawless. Tipps tactics of rotating the forwards actually suited us and when Hickey ended up at centre back towards the end he was immense. That’s where he belongs. Careyesque score at the end. 9/10
Richie; Was caught a few times but scrambled back. His hook on Callinian (i think) when he was through on goal was brilliant. Puts his body in the way every time. 8/10
Condon; His usual barnstorming self. We have a wreckless full backline that just go for everything, it is both brilliant and terrifying to watch. 8/10
O’Brien; Never really involved, though I didn’t on first viewing think his man did much either. 6/10
Wayne; Was brilliant at times, but also made some very poor mistakes. Tipps rotation meant he ended up a corner back at one stage and managed to hold his own. 7/10
Gavin; Gavin was well beaten at times yesterday and never really got into it. 5/10
Browne; Superb throughout, was everywhere and distributed excellently. 9/10
Jim Bob; MOTM by a distance, best display he’s ever had in a Limerick shirt. He was everywhere, a couple of stray shots but they couldn’t take away from his overall performance. 10/10
Dowling; It isn’t often you can score as much and still have had a quiet game. Wasn’t involved much @ hf. More involved when he went in full, scoring one beauty. More to come from Dowling when they decide on a position for him. I think FF personally. Best free taker in the country at the minute? 8/10
O’Grady; Two vital scores in quick succession when the pressure was on. Very quiet other than that though, seemed to be trying to drag the Tipp CB around the field and ended up playing nowhere in particular. 7/10
Hannon; Very quiet afternoon from Hannon. 3 miss-hit sidelines would suggest he hasn’t fully gotten over the croke park yips. Not commanding enough in the air for a big man. I’ve never seen him look as natural at hf as he did @ cb. Maybe we should look at moving him back? 5/10
Mulcahy; Unlucky his goal was disallowed, had a tough day in the corner. Both Cahill and Barrett were dominant, however the ball in was atrocious and meant for fellas twice the size. Has more danger about him than Tobin. 5/10
Downes; Someone needs to take Downes aside and tell him to stop trying for the spectacular. Between trying to out catch Maher and trying a shot while he fell backwards he was trying to do too much. Never once did he try to pull on it or flick it away from Maher, contrast that with Dowling who caused Maher much more trouble just by getting a hurley in. He is however capable of great things and he showed glimpses of that yesterday. He is not being utilised properly. Happier when running out into the corners for low ball than actually catching the sky balls Limerick were hitting in. 6/10
Tobin; Well beaten and should have been subbed sooner. Again I will say the ball in was terrible. 4/10

Tom Ryan; Great point at a vital moment when he came on 7/10

All in all, plenty to work on. Very poor in places and only the Goalkeeper, Fullback line and midfield could say there isn’t room for improvement.

Seriously need to work on our delivery into the FF line or else change the composition of it (a bit of both I think).

Hickey belongs further out the field and could replace anyone of the three hbs the next day IMO.
Need to rejig the forwards altogether. I’d like to see something like this the next day

O’Grady Downes Tom Ryan/Allis
Hannon Dowling Mulcahy

We need to win some ball in the hf line and have some size in the FF line. I’d drop Mulcahy out and let the two boys inside to see what they could do.

Teege was very slow making the changes yesterday. Tobin should have been taken off much earlier. A worrying enough sign.

From a Tipp point of view I’d be very worried, too many mediocre hurlers. Lar coming on to save the day isn’t much of a plan b either.
