means a lot junkie
The priority given to schools rugby over club rugby was obvious in my playing days. Damaged club structure, discouraged those from non playing schools to participate and above all has harmed the senior national side badly as playing numbers were limited. Even today hearing the likes of Tony Ward, George Hook go on about how they saw x doing the same thing at schools level for many years amuses me. Funny thing is I don’t think standard in the schools was all that greater than club rugby despite the elitist attitude.
it was in yesterdays alright, probably originally written in 2001
HBV is still stewing though 8 years later
let it go you clown
I think you’re great dan
means a lot Fran
I dont hate any of ye, I pity a few, but thats about it really. At the end of the day its just the internet. Some fellas take it shocking seriously.
Humphries is an odd sort, god bless him. His tirades against sports always make him sound like such a pathetic loser, its a bit odd to me. Golf and the Ryder Cup is another example of this. Even his self effacing missives about GAA life with Vins makes me want to phone him up and give him a cuddle and tell him everything will be ok. Seems like a lot of sports journo’s he writes about it because he cant play it.
It’s really a superbly acerbic and witty piece and I’ve been drawn to go back and bold some other parts of it. It’s a shame to see how boring he’s become in latter years what with his almost weekly pieces about his daughter’s camogie team and the Dublin hurling scene.
Not doubting his ability as a writer, just wondering at some of his tirades. Locker room being a weekly thing means he’s up against it sometimes, and ends up churning out some awful guff.
His book Laptop dancing and the nanny goat mambo was very good mind you.
I’m in the middle of Dublin v Kerry at the moment and it’s really well written. It’s a pity alright, I can take or leave Locker Room these days.
this is a good point, allied to Pukes earlier. its a joke that fellas who dont make the Schools 25 or whatever arent released back to their local club to play youths rugby.
In my experience when I was U18 the standard between club and school was huge. My U18 side would have been in top 10% in Munster maybe and we would have been blown away by any Schools we would have played in challenege games. The organisation levels in schools teams was massive, mainly because of time dedicated to trainig.
Savage book in fairness.
Didnt he also write Quinners auto? That was a fine read and really well laid out. He’s a good writer, Locker Room has always been more miss than hit for me.
Funny enough article buts its a stereotype thats an easy enough target and comedy thats overdone by now. Roight and Loike are about as original as an Unbelieveables tribute act.
Tom could maybe write a piece on how soccer will not accept you if you are either gay or educated.

Roight and loike are definitely overdone now, they really grate nowadays when I read them anyway. I presume you are looking for a bite with the second part of that post.

Well, it was written back in 2001. Very funny to see you get worked up about it like this.
HBV is uber sensitive these days it seems
He is allowed hold a different opinion to you bandage.
To be fair to Tom back in 2001 roysh and loike werent as played to death as they are now, although Rosser was in his pomp.

I never said he wasn’t, but his initial response by saying I have ‘issues’ for posting a funny article struck me as odd. He seemed to see it as a personal slight or something. Again, I found it strange - it’s only a funny article.
Whats funny to some isnt funny to others however. I find it contrived to be honest, a not worthy of some of his better efforts. I dont enjoy Humphries self effacing wit. I find him to be far more comfortable when chasing down a decent drug story or the likes. This is where his quality lies.
You think otherwise obviously and I allow you your opinion. Much in the same way as HBV is allowed his.

no need for the long winded explanation- if HBV cant see the humour in a ligh hearted so be it -
