Tonight's TV - Continuation of earlier drivel

Ah, she knows the answer to all the easy ones and is in quick. I keep telling her that the answers should be weighted as per the cash value, but she won’t agree.

Ireland v Romania at Italia 90 is on TG4 right now.

Yeah George must have been on one of those old Eircell block phones with an antenna during his commentary for a while. That was a very good Irish team. No real weak links with the exception of Morris perhaps. He did not have a good tournament.

Ireland are much the better team. Sheedy, McGrath and Quinn are the main men. Townsend a little also. Hagi is fairly disappointing but he looks dangerous shooting from range.

Cascarino missed two decent chance there a while back.Ireland seem to be the much better team.

Bizarre structure between the main stand in Genoa and the behind the goal. Is it an apartment block creating an optical illusion that it is part of the stadium concourse or is it actually part of the stadium…

Google was able to verify. It is indeed still part of the Luigi Ferrara stadium to this day.

Timofte was actually a real handful when he came on for Romania before he became the villain.

Big Jack’s tactics dont create many decent chances but at least the game is played mostly in Romania’s half. Romania can hardly get out if their half. Hagi looks like a good player having a bad game. Ireland should have scored when Haughten (I think it was) had a header in front of goal and should have headed it down for McGrath but went for glory instead.

Did McGrath just elbow Hagi in the face !?!? Holy fuck!

Edit: they both elbowed each other in the face , deliberately. Sound refereeing, shame that era has gone. Now youd have VAR and they’d both be off. It was still a man’s sport back then.

Yeah hardly noticed the ref only that he was Brazilian and his surname was Wright. Didnt shirk the big call on giving Hagi a yellow which would have put him out of QF.

Packie too honest not straying far from the goal line unlike this Romanian gypsy.

Imagine this moment changed Ireland forever.

Fuck my heart is in my mouth

We’re there. Scenes

Kind of emotional watching that. It was a watershed moment that kickstarted something. It was the final act on a bleak time in this country during the 80s with high unemployment and few opportunities. Mass emmigration was very prevalent and the diaspora would have been turning in from the 4 corners of the world. The scenes and the end was escapism at its finest. I hope that we are not heading back to the doldrums of the 80’s.

A month previously he faced 8 or 9 penalties in a cup final shoot out v Aberdeen . He blocked none and the Scottish cup went north

What age would you be out of curiousity, ball park?

It is an iconic structure for a relatively modern stadium .

Reasonable documentary there on Dana after the Late Late last night. Decent footage of the City of Derry in the 60s and 70s cc @Corksfinedtboy. Never realized she grew up in the Rossville St flats. Probably on the RTÉ player now.

Edit. It is on the RTÉ player.
