If I was from Kilkenny, I’d say Carey. A great player who made a good team better.
If you asked which I’d prefer to stick in a Wexford team, I’d say Shefflin. Carey would get fuck all play and would be one of those players who scored a few nice points in a moral defeat. However I think Shefflin would change an attitude of a team and make the team play better.
The two wexford lads, despite having had the likes of Larry o, can’t look past kk. It’s like a panel of Michael duignans.
Joe cooney
Iggy clarke
Eanna Ryan
Would love to have seen Liam Watson playing for a top team.
Does longevity count against Eoin Kelly? Had his legs not gone about 7 or 8 years into his inter county career? Mobile corner backs seemed to have the better of him. He’d still use his pure skill to snipe an auld score or two though.
As per the description, it was a county final in 2013 and he came off the bench but I have attended and hurled in Special finals down the years and ain’t none of them ever saw a crowd remotely like that inside the 21 yard line.
Even when only named on the bench, they came from miles around just on the off-chance of seeing him. There’s no fucking way Gowran or the other team brought that many.
Anyone in Galway (apart from the odd crotch sniffer cc @flattythehurdler ) would choose Joe over DJ. We don’t win many All-Irelands and would not have won one without Joe. If DJ were from Galway he would be classed alongside many of our other fancy dan wristy hurlers without a senior medal and would not be considered as one of the GOAT.
A top 3 is difficult to pick in fairness. My personal top 10 in no particular order
Eoin Kelly (Tipp)
JJ Delaney (KK)
Henry Shefflin (KK)
Tommy Walsh (KK)
Joe Canning (Galway)
Ken McGrath (Waterford)
Cian Lynch (Limerick)
DJ Carey (KK)
Brian Whelehan (Offaly)
Seán McMahon (Clare)
