I think Eoin Murphy has surpassed Fitzhenry
You stupid fucker.
Prob best keeping your waffle to yourself so…
But sure I’ve already said DJ shat it in All-Ireland finals. Why would I choose him?
Gas cunt.
Joe.
Henry.
JJ.
Because by the standard you’ve set Carey in finals Canning rates comfortably lower.
I was there the day Galway played Kilkenny in Thurles in knock out championship. I was only a young fella.
May have been ‘97…??
Galway had a fairly big lead but Carey dragged Kilkenny back into it single handedly. Kilkenny banged in a few goals and won it for a finish, DJ was just on a different planet that day. First time I can ever remember a football-type atmosphere at a GAA match and the Kilkenny crowd chanting “DJ, DJ, DJ.” as he tormented Galway. It was unreal. Just a buzz when he got on the ball that something would happen.
As an aside I don’t know the man from Adam but he spoke at an event for Croom GAA a couple of years back. Genuine, humble decent guy who spoke openly about his own difficulties off the pitch too.
I’d love to see him being a success as a manager (just not at our expense obviously).
An awful lot of lads who hurled against Éamonn Cregan freely say he was the best they met.
Depends how you define ‘great hurler’. For sheer panache, Mick Roche was right there. Ditto John Connolly. And so was Joe Sammon, seemingly.
John Keane was apparently flat out extraordinary. So were, it also goes, Séamus Power and Philly Grimes.
During the 1900s, Jamesy Kelleher and Matt Gargan were considered the best.
Has Joe been held scoreless in a final?
I never saw, speaking of individuals seen up close, a better hurler in pure terms than Richie Power Jr. He had it all – and maybe, all too easily, had it.
But the criteria are not confined to pure terms… Ken McGrath was something else altogether.
Rory Hanniffy was a superb hurler.
I’ve heard a lot of inter county hurlers of the 70s era say that about Cregan. Bar a lot of his Limerick team mates by the way, who found it difficult to come to terms with how much better than the rest of them he was. A true great.
I think Richie Hogan was up there in terms of pure skill. I wouldn’t have him in my top 3 because I don’t think he had the longevity but he gave 2-3 years where he could make a sliothar talk
People said DJ was unstoppable that day. If Cyril hadn’t dropped a reigning All Star corner-back then that first goal he scored would have been stopped. Incredible negligence from Cyril, both before and during the match.
Joe has been fairly clutch in finals
He was good alright
Indeed. The understated appreciation for EC has always struck me.
Very true. And RH finished probably the greatest ever championship goal in Croke Park.
Eoin Larkin and Martin Comerford while not making any top 3 lists would have been outstanding hurlers in any era.
Eoin Larkin especially, rose to the fore on the biggest occasions
John Troy another very skilful player
