Heâs a very good descender so could have pulled back a good bit there
If it had been stopped further down he could possibly have held the yellow jersey
If youâre to lose it, youâd nearly prefer to do so dying with your boots on on the final climb and know youâd given everything to keep it rather than just have the race stopped like that
Thatâs part of the glory of it even if you donât win
Especially if youâre French and have a huge crowd of supporters on the final climb - they would have roared him on with everything they were worth, even if it was obvious he was going to lose the jersey
Agreed, but, and itâs a big but, thereâs a fair few well informed people who believe that going that much faster on a descent means that the cyclist is still cranking out high watts, and is a big indication of âpreparationâ
But what a junkie. 34 mins up the alpe iirc at the end of a monster stage. He was no worse than loads. Still an uber talent. Sad individual. A lot of Italian folk still claim he was murdered.
His earring is still up there somewhere on the hill.
The book about him was a great read. There was a wonderful television picture of him coming up over the crest of a mountain in the Pyrenees the year he won which is my abiding memory of him.
Just watched the highlights. Alaphillipe blessed. He could have ended up 5th or 6th. Great to see a lad win it properly by burying his opponents in the mountains and not in a time trial.
Mine also. I was also genuinely surprised by how much money he made in what was a relatively short career, and the remarkable leverage he gave mercatore uno.
I presumed when I heard how he had died that he was half destitute.
He was lucky not to have killed himself prior to that with his more than Liberal use of epo.
