I’d say the plan will be to link it with the Limerick Junction train line somewhere in East Limerick so as the allow the new zinc mines connect directly to the port.
@TreatyStones have you been for a few pints in Shanagolden at all laterly?
The cold winds from the mountains are calling soft to me,
The smell of scented heather brings bitter memories:
A wild and lonely eagle up in the summer sky,
Flies high o’er Shanagolden, where my love Willie lie
I’ll field this one. The train runs from Foynes to Askeaton (about a mile away) to Rathkeale (a good bit out of town, it joins after the old station in town from memory) where it joins the former Tralee - Limerick line. It would then hit Adare, Patrickswell etc before hitting town.
In a moment of unparalleled* foresight Irish Rail closed the Tralee - Limerick line 50 odd years ago. Some would have imagined that the largest town in North Kerry being linked with Limerick city and connected with their respective commuter towns in Listowel, Abbeyfeale, Newcastle, Rathkeale, Adare etc could have been a very worthwhile exercise. But the visionaries in Irish Rail knew better
Not sure when they stopped running passenger trains from Foynes I’d imagine around the same time they stopped the Tralee route. Certainly well before my lifetime.
It was used to facilitate Cargo movements to Foynes after that point.

Where exactly are the Zinc Mines @TreatyStones?

*Foresight has many parallels in Irish Rail history.

Apparently they have hit huge Zinc deposits out around Pallasgreen & Caherconlish, there has been a lot of work done recently and mining is due to commence in the next couple of years.
Station at Askeaton is perfect, the line is very overgrown though. I walk it weekly with the dogs and some parts are impassable. Still though the actual track itself is fine and you wouldn’t be long clearing the bushes and grass that has grown up.
Advise needed.
I’ll be needing to travel from Birmingham to Cardiff next month. Whats the most cost effective way of doing this and should I wait until closer to the time to book??
UK trains always cheaper in advance as far as I can see. Birmingham train station is v slick should have multiple options. If you’re looking for cheap option checkout the Megabus might do the trick
