Robbie played his best football when paired with a target man and in a 4-4-2. He would have thrived in the 80s with his instincts and ability to get on the end of flick ons and crosses
What age are you?
I watched as much English soccer as I possible could through the 80âs.
I went to games over there in top 2 divisions.
They wouldnât have picked him for lack of physicality and speed for a start.
However with his whinging he did up to around age 27 he would have been sent packing anywhere he went.
He was a decent striker for his time. Did well with Ireland and scored some critical goals. But he was no superstar and definitely not Ireland best striker.
Sounds all so simple.
Did you ever watch 80âs soccer in England?
Itâs arguable he would have adapted. But I have my doubts. I do not think he would have last long enough to play top half of the table at best.
He was more suited to alot softer approach as EPL and TV took hold
Robbie was quick in his younger days, I think itâs your memory thatâs letting you down. As @Big_Dan_Campbell mentioned he would have thrived in a 442 alongside a big man. The standard was also a lot worse with less foreign players in England
Who was better?
Stapleton for a start
Srfc youth team just smashed cark city 5-1
Lolzers
Have they played Waterford yet?
What about the other big man centre half kicking the shit out of him???
How many teams played that little and large with small guys who were not incredibly robust and fast?
They are not springing to mind for me.
Plenty players held up ball but it was mostly midfielders who benefitted.
And if a centre forward was not able to win his fair share of headers he was not very highly thought of.
4-4-2 only describes a starting outline. There are many many factors that make a team/player/system after that
Ya City develop young men and broadly skilled footballers. Rovers will lose all their players because they have no idea how to develop.
It shows how low ye have gone when jumping up and down about u17 games
20 goals in 71 games for Ireland. Stop embarrassing yourself
He hasnât a notion on that either.
In a superior Irish side.
Frank nor Aldo never had to play alongside Gary Doherty
Or Caleb Folan or Leon Best or David Connolly etc etc.
Only embarrassing your bias for 4 years now
Is the discussion on who scored the most goals or who was the best player?
Goals are quite important for strikers and Robbie has made a mockery of every other striker to play for Ireland in that regard. Why do you think Frank Stapleton was a better player for Ireland than Robbie Keane?
More all round.
Tougher.
Better in the air.
More adaptable.
This is football, not the gym.
