Its fashion was coopted a long time ago. It’s come and gone out of fashion over time.
Punk was always around, but I suppose ‘true punk’ (if such a thing exists/ existed) remained an underground phenomenon. The reaction to the commercialisation of punk in late 70s led to various other movements/ sub genres (Anarcho punk in UK, hardcore (and straight edge) in the US, etc.).

You don’t really see kids dressing different these days based on the music they like (apart from the emo kids). Fashion/youth culture has certainly slowed down. I suppose it’s online where they now express themselves rather than in how they dress.
