Uk Affairs - Sterling is taking a Pounding

It’s a very odd country (which I quite like as I like oddness), it produces the likes of her, and yet is run by opportunists, cowards and gombeen men.
It’s why it is never quite as fully fcuked as it should be. Backs to the wall, it seems to endure, and it has a sprinkling of brilliant minds. And good mechanics (who work for cash). Albeit I go to Mohammed up in Rochdale.

Michael Foot, Tony Benn.
I’ve always thought it was a pity Kinnock lost that election, he would have been a great PM, he would have actually done stuff.

Agree. I was talking in more recent terms. They are paralysed by the media. The tail is wagging the dog. It’s actually awful to see.

Do you ever listen to / read Ian Dunt? He is brilliant in all of what you’re talking about.
He contributes to an excellent radio program here, Late Night Live.

I haven’t heard of him but I’ll give it a listen. It’s a complete curates egg of a country.
There’s an islamic high school for girls opened round the corner and I see all the kids getting dropped off and going in. I’d have been happy for ours to go to it tbh though I’d have counselled them off the organised religion bit. The girls all seem happy and polite and jabber away on their phones. And then you get dicks like Tommy Robinson dog whistling. For the most part, people are decent and rub along happily.
Personally I’d ban single faith schools, well actually I’d just refuse them any state support, because you should ban as little as possible, but the students there look more like a solution than a problem to me.
The influx of Hong Kong people has been brilliant. It really needs to reinstate freedom of movement with the EU, and it would be better again.
For the most part, you can find a competent person to give you a fair price on a decent job, and people here are quite stoical which I like. I also like the fact that different places are properly different.
I have the great good fortune to live in a nice place, and to work in a nice place, and there’s tens of millions who don’t, but generally, more works here than doesn’t.
It is a lot poorer than Ireland these days. It’s palpable. But it produces elite level scientists and engineers and architects and legal and financial minds. Just doesn’t do enough to promote and maintain them, and the school system is pretty shameful in many ways, underfunded. They throw money at the people who vote.

That’s always been my experience of Britain too. They have always produced brilliant artists too. Their arguably the best at Music, literature and comedy.

You sure that doesn’t happen here too?

Which? The media bit?
Not to the same extent, where things so glaringly wrong are ignored because they are afraid of a headline in an epaper.

The media happily ignore certain things (those that shall never be spoken ot) but go to town on certain others…

Where are you based in the UK? Quite like it myself to be honest.

Bradford I think. But there again I couldn’t be certain.

McWilliams crashed the Irish banking system and economy when he advised Brian Lenihan to give the banking guarantee.
