Underrated All Ireland hurling winners 2000-2019

Nope twas 10. He got a yellow within thirty seconds of coming on. Typical Toome dirt :joy:

Canā€™t recall it, who did he dunt?

Was it Fanning or Devine who nearly had his ear torn off by the big Wexford full forward Banville?

Fanning,

Came on and blindsided Eoin Larkin with shoulder to the chest and put him on his arse

Yeah, brought on in 68th min & booked in 68th min.

Banville fairly escalated that for no real reason

He was a lump of a man.

Worked out well for Tipp. Curran went in full back and won an All Star and Fanning ended up at 5 for rest of campaign

A footballer trying to hurl

I voted for Nicky quaid initially, but his day will come, then Aidan Fogarty but heā€™s only a Kilkenny bollox, so I voted for Aidan Harte

In fairness, I remember that incident as Banville minding his own business, fanning trying (and failing) to put the frighteners up him, and Banville treating him with a mixture of bemusement, disdain, and abattoir muscle.

I would have said that Fanning received huge plaudits for his performances in 2010. He would have been widely regarded as one of the top backs around. If weā€™re only going off awards, then fair enough, I suppose.

Similar with Kenny. He was class but he was probably always the less fashionable of the midfield duo and tough to actually win an All-Star. But I do feel that he was widely acknowledged as one of the top midfielders in the country at the time.

Someone like John Hoyne is probably truly underrated. Pat Oā€™Connor is probably a good shout too, he was excellent in 2013 and Iā€™d have had him ahead of Bugler & Donnellan tbqh.

Looking at that video, I have no clue where I got that idea from. :grimacing:

Cian Oā€™Connor was a corner back generally, Iā€™d say youā€™re thinking ofGarvan McCarthy, he started ahead of Timmy down in Killarney in 04 but didnā€™t last long and Timmy came on to groans but saved the day, Niall was MOTM in that years final.
I know he wasnā€™t at all underrated at the time but I wonder have people forgotten how good Ronan Curran was, close to a team of the 21st century in my opinion

Curran was outstanding. When he hurled well cork hurled well. He was one of the greats of that era. Nearly always hurled outstandingly well against Clare. The one day he didnā€™t we nearly got over the line.

Garvan McCarthys Goal in the 2004 Munster final was laughably bad.

Would Kieran Joyce be one for this thread. Centre back on a few KK all Ireland winning teams and probably a massive factor in shutting down Bonnar Maher in the 2014 replay?

Was he MOTM in that final? He was a good stopper but Conor Fogarty was more integral to that side that contested three finals

A players who would come on to groans thread would be great. We had some great ones. Dave Bennett, Eoin McGrath etc
