Underrated Football Managers

Harry Catterick and Howard Kendall don’t get the credit they deserve for their achievements.Catterick won an FA Cup as Everton manager and West Brom robbed them in the 1968 FA Cup final. He also won 2 league titles with 2 completely different squads.Howard Kendall built the best team in europe using the youth system and astute bargains. They won an FA Cup in 1984.Two league titles in 1985 and 1987 and a European Cup Winners Cup.They were unlucky in the 1985 FA Cup final because the team were tired after a long season and they would have won the double in 1986 if it wasn’t for Neville Southall getting injured. It’s a pity that team was denied the opportunity of playing in the European cup because they would have won a few of those imo. However the real reason for Evertons decline was when Colin Harvey came in as manager and he spent way too much money on poor to average players.Tony Cottee was a good player alright but he wasn’t worth 2 million. As for Peter Beagrie say no more!I find it hard to decide who is better.Kendall won a european trophy but Catterick won 2 league titles with two completely different squads while Kendall used the same core of players for his league title wins.

He always looks very dignified.

The way he was treated by Milan and the dignity and professionalism he conducted himself with throughout spoke volumes of him as a man, a classy guy.

Max going well off the pitch too, his current partner, 20 years his junior.

Back of the net.

Alan Pardew

Kendall was part of a fantastic subset of alcoholic managers. Clough, Ferguson and the Ukrainian lad who managed Kiev and the USSR showed the world that the key to football knowledge lay at the bottom of a bottle of good brandy. Halcyon days when the likes of Wenger and Mourinho wouldn’t have had a hope.
