Upcoming Republic of Ireland friendlies

The IFA only represent NI because FIFA mandated that they call themselves that. Likewise with the FAI fielding a team representing the RoI. Both associations have a claim to representing the whole island, and up until the mid 50s both fielded teams simply called ‘Ireland’ (often using some of the same players).
FIFA stepped in to clear up the confusion. The other option FIFA had was to pick one of the two organizations and recognise them as the official ‘Irish’ football association. The IFA had the more legitimate claim to this title. But if FIFA had done that then we would have been run by a bunch of northern Prods for the last 60 years and would be playing home games in Belfast, which in all likelihood would have alienated a lot of people in the south from the game.

Interesting. It still doesn’t really clear things up for me though. Practice has been that the IFA represent Northern Ireland and the FAI represent Ireland for a long time now. There can’t be any objections to changing the name to Ireland reflecting the name of the country. It’s politically incorrect to call the team RoI, not the other way around.

Why is O’Poppy not giving any chances to Stokes in the friendlies? He has used the likes of Walters, Doyle, Cox, Long and Slab in the recent friendlies but Stokes has been given no opportunity. I think he should pack in the international football, bringing a player of his quality away for three weeks after his club season has finished and subjecting him to vile degradation of sitting on the bench watching the likes of Doyle, Long, Walters and Cox running around bashing into people is a disgrace.

Did he travel? He wasn’t on the bench according to the photo of the team sheet on the FAI twitter.
