There’s a want in some that cannot ever be filled .
There’s incredible expectation about this. You can feel it. It’s like the expectation on the morning of a Ryder Cup singles day with the MATCH tied at 8-8.
Except nobody really gives a fuck about the Ryder Cup. It’s a pantomime. This matters. This is career defining.
You can feel the expectation and the tension building inside you, like the day Taylor played Barneveld at the Circus Tavern or the evening Ken Doherty went into the final session 15-9 or something ahead of Stephen Hendry or the day Liverpool played Chelsea in 2014, or the morning of the Dublin-Armagh semi-final of 2002 or the day of a US election.
People are GIDDY.
This is a BIG EVENT in a way I never thought golf could produce.
You can say what you like about Rory McIlroy, but you cannot deny one fact. He has a grown into a phenomenon who is utterly BOX OFFICE.
Whatever happens, tonight is peak Rory McIlroy. It’ll never get bigger than this.

That period between about 8:10pm and 8:40pm when dusk is slowly drawing in in Éire and Peter Alliss takes up the BBC mike for the first time this evening and the electronic soundtrack of birdsong is at its height on the telly and the real birds are singing outside in the April dusk is a sensory overload. It demands a sipping of a whiskey and fresh orange juice with a dash of Tabasco sauce.
The last time I actually experienced this was 2018 and it will never happen again but it will happen this evening.

Mood music.
The association of sporting events (though golf is not sport so none of this applies here) with music is an under explored psychological theme in the appeal of sporting events.
The way the BBC coverage would begin with the classic theme music and the helicopter slowly flying over Magnolia Lane and the way it would then sort of rise up in terms of height to give you a panoramic view of Augusta National, this was broadcasting magnificence.
I’ve also met Chip Beck. On Long Island years ago. A gent.
I really wish rors the beat here…few people appreciate the burden that comes with achieving everything early in one’s career.
