US Politics - A Society in Meltdown

Far-left radical Muslim Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who is under investigation for “improper use of campaign funds” (i.e. she stole money from her campaign funds), has tweeted support for the BLM petition to de-fund police departments across the US. She is a dangerous piece of work.

@anon7035031, have the BLM lads called out to the house yet to get you to kneel before them and apologise for your white privelage?

Be some swerve if @anon7035031 was actually black.

I think while the protests started about the murder of George Floyd they have been fueled and prolonged by a sense of the police escalation, military style response and in many cases clear criminality. You’re right, any one incident would be shocking - to see hundreds of them appear on social media in a week tells it’s own tale.

I had assuming you’re not black in parenthesis, but deleted it. It’d be some reverse ball-hop alright.

To see that roll of incidents puts paid to the argument that it’s a few bad apples, there is clearly a problem with policing in the US. It’s striking that in not one of those incidents did any other police officer intervene to protect the people they are meant to “protect and serve”. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to suggest that those forces should be disbanded and rebuilt like the RUC to the PSNI.

The same applies to the broader issue of racism in the US. There are many like Labane who would like to have you believe it is a few bad apples, a few unfortunate incidents, and there is not a systemic problem. Look away, nothing to see here. It suits them to parrot that line. It suits them to deny that there is systemic racism in the US. It suits them to say it is “the liberals” that are creating division by raising these issues (laughable), rather than accept that the division exists and is only now being highlighted. It makes them uncomfortable that light is being shed on this because they are happy with the system as it is, it works for them, they benefit from it. Labane feels attacked when anyone highlights these issues, hence the vitriol of his responses.

It’s bizarre to us that there can even be a debate as to how the police behave, or how systemic racism exists in the US. It is apparent. Labane is a raving lunatic in my view but he’s probably mild by US standards, and he’ll swear blind that there isn’t a problem in the police and there isn’t a racism problem in the US. That anyone can attempt that in the face of overwhelming evidence demonstrates how sick a country the US is.

Rudy has lost it

The republicans would appear to be in danger of losing the senate majority. The scenario of losing the house, senate and presidency is surely exercising the party.

A fine post.

Another ignored part of all this is is the gerrymandering of voting districts and voting barriers erected to disenfranchise black voters.

Very interesting posts about the realities black kids face in something the vast majority take as a common occurrence.

Fellas are letting themselves and their sides down here

His comments seemed fair enough … what’s the issue with it?

It’s actually mad that there are educated people denying that there is institutional racism in America. Or a problem with police brutality.

To look at the two presidential candidates, Trump at one stage was marking all the application forms from black people who wanted to buy his apartments with a big “C” for coloured and refusing to let black people love in his buildings, his father was probably in the KKK or at least a sympathiser, and Biden was an elected politician campaigning to keep racial segregation on Boston bus routes. None of those happened very long ago, definitely within a certain potter’s lifetime.

And when the issue of police brutality is raised, when it’s undeniable, the only thing these posters will say is “white people too” but they wont suggest anything to end the brutality. Their contribution is only ever defensive.

I dont want to make a nasty post but I think that old age is a terrible thing. I also think that anyone in the year 2020 who says that they would rather live in Oakland than Galway has to devote a lot of energy to telling themselves stories. Americans in general have to spend a lot of time telling themselves stories.

It was nice of him to allow TUM to be angry about it. Giving someone permission to be angry is a mighty sound gesture. :ok_hand:
