The worst event that happened American politics in the past 20 years was John McCain legitimising these tea party nutters by adding Sarah Palin to his ticket in 2008.
This opened the door for stupidity and mentalists to become part and parcel of daily political discourse in America and led to the normalising of bible bashing, conspiracy theorising clownshoes and ultimately the growth of MAGA.

I don’t think so, it was coming anyways. By that rationale trump not winning in 2020 would have ended his movement by keeping them out. It only made it stronger. The worst thing wasnt one event, it was cumulative. Main culprits involving campaign contributions from corporations to lobbying groups and special interest groups running wild. Plus capitalism in many forms. No one gave trump more airtime than cnn and other networks. Because he boosted ratings. He (or Roger stone etc trump himself is just a grifter) quickly identified reasons why people felt disaffected and used that. But little things eked away, biased media on both sides, pushed onto people through their phones 24/7 just makes people angry, or worn out. Even though trump is a lot of things, he’s still managed to sell himself as an outsider, as illogical as it seems. There’s no way Vance etc will be able to replicate it. And people aren’t happy with the way things are going
I must admit, I was wrong about Trump and his term in office. Whilst I thought he was an egotistical muppet that would fuck things up, I had thought that there was enough government controls, congress, judicial control etc that would mean his hairbrained ideas would be quashed and go no where. That his complete distain for Biden and Democrats wouldnt affect how he governed.
But I was wrong. Its worse. He seems to have carte blanche to do anything. And what would concern me most is that no one can speak up against him. Musk did a massive amount to get him elected, and the first time Musk went against him and said the “Big Bill” is a bad idea, Trump fucked him out of it in a big way. Why no one in his camp tells him to reign it in, or to stop obsessing over Biden and the Dems. It seems every decision he makes is borne out of resentment and an intention to just do the opposite of what Biden had implemented, no matter how fucking stupid it is to do so. The latest being that they are reversing the ban on using Asbestos as a building material. I thought surely this was a pisstake and it couldnt be true, but it seems it is, and the EPA, under Trumps approval, are looking to get asbestos back in again.
The whole issue over Russia and Ukraine he has made far worse also. And however bad Israel was, but dragging Iran into the equation, which is pretty much entirely on him, is bringing it to a whole new level.
I genuinely thought he’d make a few fuck ups, and be loud and stupid, but America seems to be in shit right now. ICE, tarriffs, inflation, the parade/protests, etc, and travel warnings being issued by countries for people travelling to America, it just seems mental. But the bigger issue is that his fuck ups are affecting global issues. Now maybe things will work out and he’ll do his remaining 3 years and it’ll all be fine, but hes been far worse than I expected him to be.
