US Presidential Election 2016: Sidney's Victory Lap

Thatā€™s it so. Will be interesting to see who Hillary approaches for running mate / Secretary of State etc. She should probably start interviewing for cabinet posts now to have it all sorted and start governing well before the inaguration.

Hillary has the Democratic ticket sown up. She came through the Benghazi hearing today relatively unscathed i.e. didnā€™t lose the cool with the morons questioning her. The Republicans are looking like right dickheads in their misguided witch hunt against her, FFS Reaganā€™s govt lost 241 marines in Beirut in 1983 and he was still reelected. Her only obstacle at this stage is the economy, if things take a nosedive in 2016 the sitting presidentā€™s party is always held accountable, rightly or wrongly. In that scenario the Republicans could run Daffy Duck and win, such is the contempt for sitting politicians already. In other words Trump, who is proving to be difficult to move off top spot for the Republican ticket, could win if the electorate is angry enough.

She was actually quite impressive in the Benghazi hearings which seem to be backfiring on the republicans now as even the most blinkered could see itā€™s an entirely partisan, politically motivated exercise.
Would you think the economy is going to tank to that extent though labane?
What is the avergae Joeā€™s take on Trump, do people think itā€™s a bit of a republican sideshow and entirely laughable, or are people other than raving looney right wing nut jobs actually taking him seriously?

Heā€™s not that right wing though thatā€™s the thing. He was a Democrat before he was a Republican, so heā€™s more of a throwback Reagan democrat. He is obviously not a polished politician, but is a smart businessman, so he will learn the ropes as he goes along. The thing with the economy is that outside of the northeast and west coast, the rest of the country isnā€™t doing that well. Trump is making China a big issue, how outsourcing has destroyed opportunities for the middle class, and he can attack his fellow Republicans and Democrats on the issue as he is an outsider. He is increasingly been seen as someone who at least knows something about big business unlike most politicians who are owned by big business. There is an increasing mood in the country that big business has hoodwinked the population and made off with all the loot (not too far from the truth). Debates between himself and Hillary could be incendiary.

But is he a good businessman? Bankrupted 6 times or something? Iā€™d imagine it would be easy to tear holes in his record, but reasoned debate based on facts does not seem to be the go in this election. Really, you could easily despatch him in a debate, but he seems to have turned it from a debate on policy to a slagging match of slogans, appealing to the most base instincts of people. Itā€™s marketing to people with short attention spans. Much like Tony Abbott did here with his three word slogans (ā€œStop the boatsā€ anyone?).

But sure thatā€™s the American way, fall down, get up again, he is a bit of a poster child for the American dream in that sense. As far as I know almost all of his bankruptcies were corporate and not personal, his net worth is in the billions, although nobody seems to be able to agree how many, although he says >10 himself. On debating I would agree his Achilles heel is foreign policy, especially against Hillary given her Secretary of State experience, but he can easily deflect by pointing to the two prior imbeciles record. His strength is that heā€™s an outsider and can be equally scathing of both partyā€™s record and get away with it. I have to say at first I thought he had no hope of getting the nomination, but the more I see of his fellow candidates I am not so sure. Jeb and Rubio seem the most electable, Rubio in particular has a generational advantage and would attract a lot of the Hispanic vote. For all their rhetoric Republicans generally settle on the candidate that is the most electable, although the Tea Party wing are making that increasingly difficult.

All good points. Heā€™s hardly done the GOP any favours with the Hispanic vote though? My impression is that the party races are a bit of a false war, as itā€™s the party members and activists who vote. So the candidate is always going to be skewed by whatever line the party is taking at the time. The Presidential Election vote itself counts on the vast majority (or at least those who bother to vote) of people not being involved in a party and the centre becomes the key. In which case Hillary has it sewn up.

President Trump and Prime Minister Corbyn. The world will be in safe hands.

Gore is the only candidate from an incumbent party to lose an election when all of the economic indicators were heading in the right direction. Which should give some hint as to how big a dickhead Gore was.

Bad and all as he was, the Supreme court decision (a supreme court with 5 Republican appointed justices) to halt the recount was a disgrace and affront to democracy. It is generally accepted now that had the recount continued and ā€œovervotesā€ counted where the intent of the voter was obvious, Gore would have won. Every effort was made in Florida to exclude as many Gore votes as possible.

Nader cost Gore the election. That and the bullshit Electoral College.
In any other country and under a proper voting system (STV, run-off etc) Gore wins.
He was robbed by history in fairness.

Something that should be coming back to bite the then Governor of Florida who is apparently now running for the GOP nomination.

He couldnā€™t win his own state FFS.

Gore lost narrowly in Tennessee. Tennessee is a red state with generally a large Republican margin of victory in a two horse race. Clinton was the only democrat in recent history to win there, on both occasions due to Ross Perot splitting the Republican vote.

The Bush campaign is in serious trouble currently, although eventually when the Republicans have to turn to a compromise electable candidate they may have to reconsider him. Trump has the Republicans running around like sheep in a heap.

Gone from Jeb! to Jeb?

Republican debate on now (is anyone watching, does anyone care?).
Can one of these circus freaks step up to stop the populist juggernaut that is Ben Carson?

Would you ever live over beyond there?

Good god no. I spent three months there in 1991, was more than enough. Nice to visit, but jesus, would never live there.

Bunch of clowns. Carly for all her corporate failure at least can speak semi coherently and has a brain. Trump a total bust tonight. Let Hillary and Carly at it, the rest of them are lightweights intellectually and/or or politically.
