How is it deflection? There has been hundreds of thousands of migrants into the US. The majority were allowed into places like Colombia with no issue, it was not like there were people washing up on Med islands with the Syrian issue. The first large tragedy (aside from the fact that people have to move in the first place because of the failing government) was this week.
Every country is entitled to a border, however, and to let who they want to in. That’s part of nationhood.
There is no feigned concern. The likes of Rubio were beating this drum for a long time, back when the left were still hailing Venezuela as a beacon of hope for socialist ideology every time it was brought up.
As I said, the people delighted with this are Jeremy Corbyn types, Iran and Russia.
Were you calling for Venezuela refugees into Ireland at the time of the Syrian crisis, or was it the fact that the latter was all over the news that appealed?
I don’t agree with every little thing the US does on migrants, but the broad thrust of having a secure border and deciding your own migration policy I don’t have an issue with.
That isn’t the issue here though, it is a straw man. You could be concerned about the Syrian crisis without necessarily wanting to let a huge influx of that population into your country. Similar with Venezuela.
Let us stick to the facts at hand. The Venezuelan government ran the country into the ground after relying on a fossil fuel economy, this was cheerleaded by many as fantastic. That has forced millions to flee and unlike other mass migrations in recent years, that is not down to war or conflict. There is a continued cabal of fringe nations in the world order and ideological purists that continue to defend the regime.
