Brooklyn, with its notoriety for nurturing rap and non mainstream music, may not appear as though the most evident place to hold the Video Music Awards — with its attention on pop stars like Katy Perry and Bruno Mars.
Yet when MTV executives decided to stage the grants program at Barclays Center in the not so distant future, they chose to give it a Brooklyn vibe. Thus, maybe inescapably, the V.m.a.s, to be show at 9 p.m. on Sunday, will showcase the work of a renowned worldwide Williamsburg craftsman, and brownstones and adolescent Brooklynites.
“You are set to get a taste of Brooklyn all through the show,” said Stephen Friedman, president of MTV.
Celebrity central the famous people will tread will be on a neighborhood road behind the coliseum, where blurred brownstones, unobtrusive storefronts, a corner bodega and a city play area are the setting. The configuration for the show grabs the dark and white colors of the Brooklyn Nets, who call the enclosure home, and echoes the matte, urban look of Barclays Center itself, with its whooshing veneer of rusted steel.
The Moonman recompense statue has been upgraded by the Brooklyn craftsman KAWS and will be the focal theme of the night: a 60-foot-tall rendition will stand amidst the enclosure. Short movies emphasizing Brooklyn scenes, characters and topics will be demonstrated on the enormous TV screens above the floor throughout the show. MTV has sent throwing executors out to discover many junior Brooklynites — from Williamsburg trendy people to hip-jump b-young men — to make up a great part of the swarm standing (and, makers trust, moving) on the floor at the foot of principle stage.
